Women's Basketball Defeated by Mount Holyoke, 51-43

FRANKLIN, Mass. – November 19, 2022 – The Dean College women's basketball team was defeated by Mount Holyoke, 51-43, inside Pieri Gymnasium Saturday afternoon.  

Dean (0-3) begins a three-game road trip on Tuesday with a 5:30 p.m. tip at Lesley. Mount Holyoke (1-3) returns home on Tuesday to host Westfield State at 7 p.m.

Sophomore Tori Viau (Johnston, R.I.) led Dean with 17 points. Sophomore Cat Thomas (Woodbridge, Conn.) scored nine points and grabbed 11 rebounds. Sophomore Tori Andrewski (North Sutton, N.H.) pulled down a game best 14 rebounds.

First-year Alex Twomey (Nutley, N.J.) registered 17 points and nine rebounds to lead Mount Holyoke. Sophomore Marley Berano (Lady Lake, Fla.) scored 16 points, while junior Nicole Lutalo (Kampala, Uganda) tallied 10 rebounds.

The Bulldogs came out strong in the first quarter to lead 17-6 after 10 minutes. Dean shot 8-of-18 and held the Lyons to 3-of-16 shooting. Viau had nine points to lead all scorers.

Mount Holyoke responded with an impressive second quarter to outscore the home team 19-3 and take a 25-20 lead into halftime. The Lyons made three long balls and allowed only one Dean field goal to turn things around. Junior Emily Mock (Bangor, Maine) scored six points for the Lyons.

Dean was able to tie the game at 28-28 midway through the third frame after an Andrewski layup. Mount Holyoke ended the quarter on a 7-4 run to lead 35-32 after 30 minutes. Thomas scored the final four points of the stanza for Dean.

In the fourth, Mount Holyoke was able to hold on to the lead despite Dean pulling within a pair on multiple occasions. The Lyons made just one field goal in the quarter but were 14-of-22 from the free throw line to outscore Dean 16-11 in the final 10 minutes.
