FRANKLIN, Mass. – October 12, 2022 – The Dean College men's soccer team tied Albertus Magnus, 1-1, in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action with a beautiful fall foliage backdrop at Lippert Field Wednesday afternoon.
Dean (4-6-2, 2-5-2 GNAC) will honor its seniors on Friday with a noon kick against non-conference foe Fisher to begin homecoming weekend festivities. Albertus Magnus (7-3-4, 5-2-3 GNAC) returns home on Saturday to host Anna Maria at 2:30 p.m.
The teams battled for field position in the first segment of the match. Albertus Magnus had a dangerous scoring opportunity in the 25th minute when senior Ben Pierce (Meriden, Conn.) took a shot towards the oncoming Dean goalie. First-year goalie
Jake Godwin (Norwalk, Conn.) was able to get a hand on the ball, but it was still destined for the back of the net. Dean junior
Andrew Dalton (Norton, Mass.) was able to get a foot on the ball before it crossed the line to keep the game scoreless.
The Bulldogs then struck for a 1-0 lead in the 29th minute. The Dean forwards were pressuring the Albertus Magnus defenders and goalie and forced a misplay into the center of the box. First-year
Jake Richard (Townsend, Mass.) ran the ball down and got a shot off before the goalie could recover. The goal was Richard's third of the season and sent Dean into the halftime break with a 1-0 lead.
In the 62nd minute, the Bulldogs thought they doubled the advantage when
Ryan Bell (Palmyra, Maine) had a scoring chance thwarted by Kelvin Cortez (Meriden, Conn.) who kept the ball from crossing the goal line.
Albertus Magnus notched an equalizer in the 66th minute on a nifty play. Cortez was dribbling towards the box where senior teammate Anthony Barreira (Trumbull, Conn.) found space a few yards ahead of him. A perfect thru ball by Cortez gave Barreira the opening and he deposited his first tally of the season
Godwin finished the contest with four saves for the Bulldogs. Albertus Magnus freshman goalie David Lucero (East Haven, Conn.) made a couple of stops for the Falcons.
Albertus Magnus finished the match with a 17-9 advantage in shots (6-4 on goal) and a 9-3 margin in corner kicks.
