DARTMOUTH, Mass. – September 11, 2021– The Dean College football team fell at UMass Dartmouth, 48-29, Saturday afternoon.
UMass Dartmouth improves to 2-0 and will play at Framingham State next Saturday. Dean goes to 1- and travels to Husson next Friday for a 6 p.m. game under the lights against the Eagles.
Dean quarterback David Curry (Bethlehem, Ga.) was 25-48 for 235 yards, three touchdowns and two picks. He added 79 rushing yards, which included a 61-yard touchdown run. Mike Bethune Jr. (New Haven, Conn.) registered 84 rushing yards and 26 receiving yards on four catches. Jordan Mason (McDonough, Ga.) led the Dean receivers with 99 yards with a touchdown on four catches, while Ki'sean Bullard (Miami Gardens, Fla.) added a receiving touchdown on three catches with 67 yards. Quintus Reid (New Haven, Conn.) also had a TD catch. He finished with a team-high seven catches.
UMass Dartmouth quarterback Dante Aviles-Santos went 15-29 for 321 yards and five touchdowns. Douglas Machado had seven catches with two scores and a 192 receiving yards. Luis Gonzalez compiled 143 rushing yards and a touchdown for the Corsairs.
Dean junior Desmond Dias (Rochester, Mass.) led all tacklers with 11.
The Corsairs began the scoring, less than two minutes into the game, when Dante Aviles-Santos hit Mike Vincent for a 41-yard touchdown pass and catch.
Dean answered right away on the next play from scrimmage when Dean quarterback David Curry ran 61 yards for the score.
UMass Dartmouth kept the air attack going later in the first quarter as Aviles-Santos connected with Antonio Brown for a 55-yard TD reception and Douglas Machado for a 78-yard touchdown catch. The Corsairs failed on all three point after attempts in the frame to take an 18-7 lead into the second quarter.
The second quarter went scoreless, but the offense would pick back up in the second half.
Aviles-Santos pushed the home team's advantage to 24-7 with a QB keeper from the 1-yard line, less than four minutes into the third.
Dean kept battling and pulled within two scores after Curry found Jordan Mason for a 24-yard TD catch.
The Corsairs added one more score in the waning moments of the third quarter. Aviles-Santos hooked up with Thomas Zednik for a 14-yard TD through the air. The Corsairs led 30-14 after three.
Early in the fourth, Curry found Bullard for a 44-yard touchdown. Curry then connected with Reid for the two-point conversion to cut the deficit to 30-22.
UMass Dartmouth answered two minutes later with another TD pass from Aviles-Santos. This time he found Machado for a nine-yard score.
Dean continued to fight and brought the score to 36-29 after Curry tossed a 13-yard TD pass to Reid. That would be as close as the Bulldogs would get as UMass Dartmouth secured the win with a 2-yard TD run by Marvens Jean and a 40-yard gallop by Luis Gonzalez to account for the 48-29 final.
