THE LEAD:
Castleton tailback Moe Harris ran for 200 yards – including the game-winning 44-yard score with less than three minutes to play and the host Spartans escaped with a 17-14 win over Dean College in ECFC football action on Saturday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
The contest was a defensive battle early on with neither team finding an offensive rhythm until late in the second quarter when Castleton put points on the board right before the half.

Mitchell Caron connected with Jermaine Coggins on two plays – one for 33 and the other for 17 – to put the Spartans deep into Bulldogs' territory. Harris took over from there, running four straight times until he found the endzone with less than two minutes left in the half.

Down 7-0 to start the third, the Cardinal and White swung momentum on the second half kickoff when Nazeer Grier (Newark, N.J.) stripped Calvin James and Austin Sumrall (Medfield, Mass.) was there for the recovery, giving Dean the ball at the Castleton 40-yard line.

It didn't take long for the Bulldogs to capitalize as Kordell Scott (Orlando, Fla.) found David Brown (Cheraw, S.C.) for 16 yards on third and ten and then again for 24 yards for the game-tying score on the next play.

Things stayed that way until early in the fourth quarter when the Spartans embarked on a 12-play, 53-yard drive that chewed up nearly six minutes of clock time. That drive stalled out inside the ten-yard line and the hosts settled for a chip shot field goal from Ryan Payne.

After Dean turned the ball over on a fumble on their next possession, Castleton took over on the Bulldogs' side of midfield. Their offense was forced to punt and when they did, Ricco Aaron (Douglasville, Ga.) was able to break through and block it straight up into the air. The ball came down into the arms of Gene Baisden, Jr. (Tampa, Fla.) and he raced 55 yards untouched into the endzone for the go-ahead score.

Harris had a 26 yard run on the Spartans following possession and they were in the redzone in just five plays. The Bulldog defense held Castleton off the board, however, as they forced three straight incompletions.

Dean couldn't salt the game away the next time they had the ball so, after a Scott punt, the Spartans took over at their own 42-yard line. Caron hit Adnane Adossama for 14 yards and then Harris sprinted to the endzone on the next play to put the hosts back in front for good at 17-14.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
Dequan Brown (Newark, N.J.) led the Bulldog rushing attack with 51 yards on nine carries, while Scott and Matt Bethel (Miami, Fla.) combined to complete 10-of-23 passes for 87 yards and Scott's first career touchdown pass.

Aaron paced the Dean defense with 13 tackles, including two tackles for a loss, while Mujahid Camel (East Orange, N.J.) finished with 12 tackles and D'Wayn Reid (Springfield, Mass.) added ten tackles (four for a loss) and 1.5 sacks.

UP NEXT:
Dean will continue its stretch of road contests when they travel to Washington, D.C. to face Gallaudet next Saturday. Kickoff for that ECFC showdown is slated for 12:00 PM.
