NORTHAMPTON, Mass. – The Dean College field hockey team was defeated on Wednesday afternoon, falling short to Smith College by a final score of 7-1. With the loss, the Bulldogs dropped to 6-3 overall, while the Bears improved to 5-5.
Notables:
-Junior goalkeeper
Sara Gardner (Hampstead, Md.) impressed in her first game since being promoted to team captain. She finished the night with 24 saves, setting a new program record for the most in a single game. This is also her highest total since the NCAA Tournament last year.
How it Happened:
-The Bears made quick work in the opening quarter, scoring two goals in the first six minutes. Megan O'Connor and Anouk Bosket scored the goals, respectively, to give Smith the early advantage.
-Dean quickly responded with a goal of their own.
Emily Yazzetti (Mahopac, N.Y.) scored her eleventh goal of the year to cut their deficit to one.
-Nyla Flamer scored an additional goal for Smith before the first half closed, giving them a 3-1 lead going into the break.
-Over the course of the next two quarters, the Bears scored four consecutive goals. This included the second goal of the game for O'Connor.
