FRANKLIN, Mass. – The Dean College women's volleyball team was defeated in their season opener on Tuesday night, losing to UMass Dartmouth by a final score of 3-0 (25-7, 25-2, 26-24). With the loss, the Bulldogs begin their year 0-1 while the Corsairs improve to 1-0.
How it Happened:
-Dean opened the match with four of the first six points. With three of the points being Corsair errors,
Nayah Alexis (Lauderdale Lakes, Fla.) supplemented the effort with her first kill of the year.
-However, UMass Dartmouth quickly seized control of the set, securing multiple kills to move ahead 16-6. Allison Pate led the way with consecutive kills during the rally.
-Junior
Maddy Seymour (Simsbury, Conn.) broke the chain with a kill of her own, bringing Dean to seven points in the set. However, UMass Dartmouth's efforts proved to be too strong. They secured seven straight points to win the first set 25-7.
-The second set proved to be much of the same for UMass Dartmouth. Their attack helped corral 16 of the set's first 17 points. Seymour grabbed Dean's first point of the middle set with her second score.
-Despite just one error in the next nine points, the Corsairs trounced the Bulldogs to win set two by an impressive 25-2 score.
-With their backs against the wall, the Bulldogs displayed an incredible effort in the final set. The rally began with a strong kill from newcomer
Angelina Steiger (Oxford, Mass.) and another UMass error.
Ali Murphy (Middleboro, Mass.) later added to the score with a kill of her own.
-However, the Bulldogs truly broke free in the middle portion, going on a 10-0 run. The rally was led by setter
Rafaela Prebianchi (South Dennis, Mass.), who set the tone with several key serves and an ace from the service line.
-Seymour also played a heavy role in the stretch with four kills. At the end of the rally, Dean led 14-7 and forced a UMass timeout.
-However, the Corsairs slowly clawed their way back, bringing the deficit to just four points. Dean called a timeout with the hopes of regrouping.
-
Chloe Demaio (Needham, Mass.) and Seymour went back to the attack, bringing Dean to set point. Although impressive, the Corsairs stunned Dean with a 7-0 comeback at the end of the set. Pate led the effort with three kills, giving UMass Dartmouth the set 26-24 and match 3-0.
Standouts:
- Seymour (9 Kills, 23 Total Attempts, 3 DIGs)
-Demaio, Alexis (2 Kills Each)
