Culligan Tosses Eight Innings, Baseball Takes Massive Game Two with Saint Joseph’s College

STANDISH, Maine – Senior Kiefer Culligan (Windsor Locks, Conn.) had the performance of his career on Saturday afternoon, tossing eight innings with nearly 140 total pitches to help the Dean College baseball team take a massive game-two victory against Saint Joseph's College of Maine. The 7-3 final score gave Dean the doubleheader split, and with the win, they improved to 16-13 (8-8 GNAC). Meanwhile, the Monks shifted to 25-10 (10-6 GNAC).

GAME ONE: Saint Joseph's College 6, Dean College 2

The Basics

LOSING PITCHER: Stephen Wyszynski (Springfield, Mass.)
TOTAL TIME: 2:00

How it Happened
-Dean struck first in the second inning, capitalizing on defensive miscues to plate two unearned runs. Gavin Goss (Glenwood Landing, N.Y.) scored the game's first run, and Spencer Lichstrahl (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) later came home on a throwing error to give the Bulldogs a 2–0 lead.
-The Monks answered in the bottom half of the inning, as a two-run single tied the game at 2–2, quickly shifting momentum.
-Saint Joseph's took control in the third inning, stringing together hits and taking advantage of a Dean error to score three runs and build a 5–2 advantage.
-Dean looked to respond offensively, with Colin Favata (Syosset, N.Y.) Case LaChance (Latham, N.Y.), and Dylan Altermatt (North Branford, Conn.) each recording hits, but the Bulldogs were unable to capitalize with runners in scoring position.
-The Monks added an insurance run in the fourth inning, extending the lead to 6–2 and maintaining control of the game.
-On the mound, Wyszynski worked through four innings, striking out one while battling through traffic against a patient Saint Joseph's lineup.
-JR Salvadore (Barre, Mass.) provided solid relief out of the bullpen, tossing two scoreless innings to keep Dean within striking distance late.
-Defensively, the Bulldogs made key plays behind their pitchers, including limiting further damage after the third inning.
-Dean continued to fight in the late innings but was held scoreless after the second, as the Monks' relief staff closed out the game.

How it Happened
-Dean struck early in the first inning, as Tyler Giambra (Prospect, Conn.) set the tone at the top of the lineup and came around to score, giving the Bulldogs an early advantage.
-The Bulldogs continued to apply pressure in the second inning, with Favata delivering a key RBI hit to extend the lead and build early momentum.
-Dean added to its lead in the third inning, stringing together quality at-bats as LaChance and Justin Horton (Trumbull, Conn.) helped generate traffic on the bases.

-On the mound, Culligan settled in after early contact, working efficiently through the middle innings and limiting Saint Joseph's scoring chances. This would be the beginning of his late-game push.

-Saint Joseph's attempted to rally late, scoring runs in the middle-to-late innings, but Culligan slammed the door to remain on top. The senior finished with eight innings pitched, allowing just three earned runs while striking out six.
