FRANKLIN, Mass. – The Dean College men's volleyball team strolled back into the win column on Wednesday evening, taking down Fisher College by a final score of 3-0. With the win, the Bulldogs improve to 6-13 overall, while the Falcons drop to 0-11.
How it Happened:
-The Bulldogs quickly propelled into the early lead over Fisher. They scored 13 of the match's first 18 points, including two service aces from senior
Jerney Price (San Antonio, Texas) and first-year
Antonio Varela (East Providence, R.I.).
-However, Fisher stayed involved thanks to errors from the Bulldogs. Dean registered six total errors in the first set, with four coming from service.
-Despite the errors, the Bulldogs found their footing and pulled away in the latter moments of the first set. Kills by Price and
Will Wheatley (Dover, N.H.) propelled Dean to a decisive 25-14 victory in the opening bout.
-Wheatley struck again in the second set, grabbing the Bulldogs' first point. The Falcons, though, snagged four of the set's first six points. They led 4-2 in the early going.
-This lead didn't last for long. Dean quickly rallied back with points from
Travis Johnson (Taunton, Mass.) and
Evan Boulay (Lincoln, R.I.). After two straight service aces from
Rayan Echelh (Revere, Mass.), the Bulldogs regained the lead, 11-9.
-Later in the set, service aces became the topic of conversation again. Varela lined up at service line, eventually smacking four straight aces. His efforts, combined with three previous kills, contributed to a 7-0 Bulldogs run.
-Another score from Echelh helped the Bulldogs win set two, 25-15.
-Dean dominated once again in the third set, winning by set two's score of 25-15. This also gave them the match sweep by a final score of 3-0.
-In the final moments of the match, first-year
Daniel Duggan (Walpole, Mass.) entered the match. The rookie hitter scored back-to-back kills, sending Pieri Gym into a frenzy. His scores were two of the final three points Dean needed to win the match.
