Men’s Volleyball Stymied in Pair at Hartwick College Tri-Match

ONEONTA, N.Y. – The Dean College men's volleyball team was defeated in both their matches at Hartwick College on Friday evening by a final score of 0-3. With their losses to Hartwick and SUNY Polytechnic Institute, the Bulldogs drop to 5-9 (0-0 GNAC) on the year.

MATCH ONE: SUNY Poly 3, Dean College 0 (25-20, 25-22, 26-24)
-Despite a 3-0 loss in the first match, the Bulldogs kept it close throughout all three sets. Travis Johhnson (Taunton, Mass.) helped the Bulldogs' consistent offense, scoring nine kills with a service ace.
-Antonio Varela (East Providence, R.I.) snagged Dean's first kill of the match from an assist by senior Hunter Armitage (Westerly, R.I.). Varela would finish the match with seven total scores.
-Dean held brief leads through the entire second set thanks to a season-high 16 kills in one set. They previously scored 16 kills in a set against VTSU Johnson on 1/17 and Sarah Lawrence College on 2/21.
-However, the Wildcats prevailed with kills to win each of the first two sets. Dean now found themselves trailing 2-0 going into the final set.
-The third set was a thriller, with a combined 50 points scored by both teams. SUNY Poly took the early 6-2 lead, but it was quickly negated by scores from Johnson and Arthur Felicio (Saugus, Brazil).
-The lead continued to shift back and forth. Both Dean and SUNY Poly took turns at the helm, but neither side managed to pull away in the set.
-However, with the set at 22-20, the Wildcats found their stride and went on a run. They scored two straight kills to put them in position to win, 24-20.
-Their efforts were met by a large response from the Bulldogs. Dean went on a 4-0 run, including a pair of kills from Johnson, to force a win-by-two scenario.
-SUNY Poly's Andrew Baaki had the final response, scoring two kills to end the match. The Wildcats took the victory by a final score of 3-0.
 
MATCH TWO: Hartwick College 3, Dean College 0 (25-15, 27-25, 25-11)
-Hartwick took a quick first set, victory defeating the Bulldogs by a score of 25-15. The Bulldogs had four kills in the opening affair, with Felicio having two. Ayden Rogers (Tewksbury, Mass.) also grabbed a kill in the first set.
-After losing the first set, Dean responded with a strong start to the second. They opened with a hefty 3-0 run. Brandon Mimande (East Providence, R.I.) grabbed the first kill, followed by a score from Varela. Armitage also had a service ace in the opening stretch.
-Dean continued their run in the second set, extending it to a 7-1 stretch. Dean took advantage of the Hartwick errors 7 solidified their insurance.
-However, Hartwick clawed their way back in the set, cutting the Dean margin to just one point (12-11).
-The Hawks continued to strike, eventually taking the lead on a 6-0 run. They now had the 18-14 advantage over Dean.
-With their backs to the wall, Dean found their stride and rallied back into the score. Casey DuBois (Dracut, Mass.) became a big factor in the run, scoring an ace on two service attempts. With DuBois' efforts, Dean cut the Hawk lead to just one point (19-18).
-Dean continued their rally, eventually tying the set at 23. Jerney Price (San Antonio, Texas) and Preston Carmody (Londonderry, N.H.) found the box score with kills during the run.
-Hartwick had the first try at set point with a kill by Badr Aly, but it was quickly wiped with by score from Varela. This also forced another win-by-two set.
-Both sides scored again to make it 25-25. However, Hartwick took advantage on an error and service ace to win set two by a score of 27-25.
-With a 2-0 lead in the match, Hartwick took the reins and won the final set by a score of 25-11. Dean saw kills from a quartet of players, including Johnson, Mimande, Varela, and sophomore Noah Allan (Windham, N.H.). Hartwick took the match by a score of 3-0.
