KISSIMMEE, Fla. – The Dean College softball team was defeated in their opening set of contests at THE SPRING GAMES in Kissimmee, Florida on Sunday afternoon. The team was defeated by Penn State University – Berks 3-2 and Washington & Jefferson College, 4-3.
With the pair of losses, the Bulldogs drop to 0-2 to begin their 2026 season.
GAME ONE: Penn State Berks 3, Dean College 2 (8 Inn.)
-The Bulldogs opened the game with two quick scores in the first inning.
Sydnee Ramos (New Bedford, Mass.) scorched a double to right-center field, bringing home
Xandra Silva (New Britain, Conn.).
-
Leah Chamberlain (Burlington, Vt.) then brought in another run on a groundout effort. At the end of the first inning, the Bulldogs had a quick 2-0 lead.
-However, the Nittany Lions clawed their way back into the box score in the second and fifth innings. Ashlynn McCardle reached with an error by X. Silva, allowing Paige Brightwell to score. In the fifth, PSB tied the game with an RBI single by Emma Infantino. It was now 2-2 going into the sixth inning of action.
-Both sides were rendered scoreless through the next two innings of play due to strong defense. Dean came close to scoring in the top of the sixth, grabbing runners on first and second. However, a groundout by Chamberlain ended the rally. The game went into extra innings with the score 2-2.
-To open the top of the eighth,
Ashlee Mastrodomenico (Middleboro, Mass.) as caught stealing third, wiping the bases clean. Dean's batters were then retired in order, opening the door for Penn State.
-The Nittany Lions walked it off at the bottom of the eighth. Shayna Morales recorded an RBI single, scoring Paige Brightwell for the winning run. Dean fell in a heartbreaker by the final score of 3-2.
GAME TWO: Washington & Jefferson College 4, Dean College 3
-The Presidents opened the score with a quick 2-0 lead. Hannah Allen and Maddie Luxenberger recorded back-to-back singles, putting them on top by a pair.
-They struck again in the third inning. Allen launched a sacrifice flyout to right field, allowing Mirranda Rinehart to tag-up and score. It was now Presidents going into the bottom half.
-However, the Bulldogs clawed back for an impressive three-run bottom half to tie the game. Chamberlain kicked off the affairs with an RBI single, allowing Mastrodomenico to score.
-Chamberlian was quickly brought home on an RBI single from senior
Liana Silva (New Britain, Conn.). Then, with runners in position, first-year
Nina Ostafin (West Hartford, Conn.) drove-in the tying run with an RBI single. The Bulldogs had tied it, 3-3, going into the fourth.
-The Presidents remained at the front lines, taking the lead once again in the top of the fourth. Addison Reese recorded yet another RBI single, allowing Luxenberger to score.
-Washington & Jefferson's pitching kept Dean afoot through the final two full innings. The Bulldogs only recorded two hits and four total baserunners in the next three frames.
-The Bulldogs were stripped of one last chance to tie the game in the seventh. In the top half of the inning, the remainder of the game was cancelled due to lightning in the area. The Bulldogs ultimately fell to the Presidents by a final score of 4-3.
