FRANKLIN, Mass. – Seniors
Christian Yeates (Atlanta, Ga.) and
Randy Vasquez (Methuen, Mass.) recorded double-doubles en route to men's basketball's 79-67 Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) victory over New England College.
With Saturday's win, the Bulldogs improve to 14-5 (4-2 GNAC), while the Pilgrims drop to 6-12 (1-6 GNAC).
How it Happened:
-The Bulldogs ran to an early lead on the backs of Yeates and Vasquez. Yeates scored the first basket of the game, followed by a strong layup from Vasquez.
Izayah Porter (Jonesboro, Ga.) also got involved at the free throw line. Dean led 11-4 after the game's first five minutes.
-Even though the Pilgrims eventually found their stride, Dean continued to control the pace of the game.
Donnary Fontenot (Atlanta, Ga.) and
Naser Motley (Everett, Wash.) each converted on baskets, giving Dean a ten-point lead. Motley also knocked down a three-point shot to advance the lead to 13 points.
-Dean's dominance continued through the entirety of the first half. They shot 40 percent from the field while converting over 50 percent of their free throws.
-Fouls also became a prominent factor in the first half. There were 21 combined fouls in the first half, including 13 from New England College. The Bulldogs entered the bonus at the end of the half, allowing them to snag extra points on free throws.
-At the end of the half, Dean led by a score of 40-32.
-The second half began with a much different story than the first. NEC opened with an impressive 16-2 run, slashing the Bulldog lead and taking a 49-48 advantage.
-Yeates responded for Dean with a quick layup, allowing them to regroup with a full timeout.
-Dean came out of the timeout and regained control of the game.
Darius Leonard (Washington, D.C.) and Motley scored from the field, followed by a strong layup by
Cedric Louis (Miami, Fl.).
-The Bulldogs eventually rebuilt their 10-point advantage with just under eight minutes to play. Technical fouls gave NEC a chance to strike, but Dean ultimately kept their footing.
-New England College also got into foul trouble at the end of the game. Luke Montejo would foul out of the contest, followed by several other players with 3-4 fouls each.
-Dean took advantage at the free-throw line and ultimately sealed their victory by a final score of 79-67.
