Boston, MA- the #3 seeded Dean College men's lacrosse team was stunned at the final moments of their GNAC Quarterfinals match, falling to #2 seeded Emmanuel College in overtime 14-13. With the loss, the men's lacrosse team's season has come to a close.
Emmanuel took no time to get on the board first, scoring the opening goal 53 seconds in. The would score again shortly after to take a 2-0 lead. However, the Bulldogs would find the net at 9:53 with a goal from
Alec Speirs (Old Lyme, CT), assisted by
Manny Alvarez-Segee (Saugus, MA). After two more goals from the Saints, Dean would go on a small rally of their own, seeing goals from
Diego Alvarez-Segee (Saugus, MA) and
Jason Richard (Holden, MA). With one more from Emmanuel, the Saints would lead 5-3 after 15 minutes of action.Â
The second quarter would open with two quick strikes, one from each side. Speirs would net his second for Dean in the joust. Emmanuel would then score two more goals, only for Richard to score again for Dean on the power play. Emmanuel would go on one more rally to end the half, outscoring Dean 3-1 to into the locker room. M. Alvarez-Segee would net the final goal for Dean, but the Bulldogs would find themselves down 11-6 after two.Â
Entering the second half, the Bulldogs entered with laser-sharp focus. Not only did they strike first, they would completely dominate the third and first half of the fourth quarter, going on a 7-0 rally. Contributions included goals from Speirs, Richard, D. Alvarez-Segee, and M. Alvarez-Segee. This rally also gave Dean a 13-12 lead with 7:40 remaining.Â
The Bulldogs would hold the lead in regulation until the very last second. With 0:01 on the clock, Emmanuel would find the back of the net and tie the game, sending the quarterfinal match into overtime.Â
Even into overtime, the dog fight continued. Both sides traded blows, but neither would budge. With ten seconds remaining, Emmanuel would send themselves into the semi-finals with the game-winning goal. The Bulldogs would walk away on the latter side of the score, 14-13.
Offensively, Speirs would lead Dean's efforts, scoring nine points from five goals and four assists. M. Alvarez-Segee finished with six points, while D. Alvarez-Segee ended with five. Richard ended with a hat trick, and
Kyle Pianka (Greenville, RI) completed the scorecard with an assist.
Elijah Beland (Augusta, ME) opened the game in-goal, making five saves.
Dane Duarte (Londonderry, NH) would takeover in the second half, making 13 saves but ultimately taking the loss.Â
