Franklin, MA- Junior
Sydnee Ramos (New Bedford, MA) roped the game-winning single that lifted the Dean College softball team over Elms College Monday afternoon. This also completes a double-header originally started on April 15th. With the walk-off victory, the Bulldogs split the series and move to 7-17 (2-10) on the year.
Game One: Elms College 7, Dean College 3 (April 15th)
In the series opener, Elms struck early in the first inning, capitalizing on a fielding error to take a 1–0 lead. Dean responded in the bottom of the second with a two-run single by
Alyssa Ribarovski (Sydney, Austrailia), scoring
Katrina Lee (Brookline, NH) and
Katie Splaine (Tyngsborough, MA), giving the Bulldogs a 2–1 advantage. However, Elms regained the lead in the fourth inning on consecutive RBI base hits. In the sixth innings, the Blazers poured it open, benefiting from a fielding error and another RBI knock. With a scoreless seventh, the Bulldogs fell by a score of 7-3.
The Bulldogs' offense was led by both Ramos and
Leah Chamberlain (Burlington, CT), recording two hits each. Four additional Bulldogs recorded one hit each.
Bryce DeGasparre took the loss in the circle for Dean.
Game Two: Dean College 8, Elms College 7 (April 21st)
Game two was resumed on April 21st due to rain. Despite being down 1-0 to begin on Monday, the Bulldogs quickly found the scoreboard.
Liana Silva (New Britain, CT) would reach base on an error, which also allowed two runs to cross the plate. After three innings, Dean would take the 2-1 lead. However, that wouldn't be the end. The Bulldogs scored three more runs in the fourth inning thanks to contributions from
Xandra Silva (New Britain, CT),
Madison Nereu (Wareham, MA), and Ramos. Dean would lead 5-1 after four.
Elms, over the course of the next few innings, would claw their way back. After an RBI double by Chamberlain in the fifth, Elms would be down 6-5 going into the final inning. With two outs left, Sydney Barthel would rope an RBI double, scoring two and taking the lead 7-6. However, in the bottom half,
JJ Greene (New Bedford, MA) would be the hero, slamming a double that nearly escaped the ballpark to tie the game at 7-7. This sent both teams into extras in what was shaping to-be an instant classic.
DeGasparre, who came into the game to relieve
Natalie Hayes (Brewster, NY) would slam the door on Elms, posting a scoreless eighth on the mound. This would set the stage for the bottom half. X. Silva would start on second, eventually being moved over by a sacrifice bunt by Nereu. With one out and a runner on third, Ramos would step to the plate. On the first pitch, she drilled the game-winning RBI single that scored Silva and won the game 8-7. DeGasparre would take the win in the circle, and Ramos led offensively with her 3-4 performance with two RBIs.
The Bulldogs return home on Wednesday, April 23rd, hosting Vermont State University - Johnson in their final non-conference series of the season. Start times are set for 3:00 and 5:00PM.
