West Hartford, CT- The Dean College softball team dropped both of their contests on Sunday afternoon versus the University of Saint Joseph (CT). The Bulldogs lost game one by a score of 3-2, and game two by a score of 8-1. Dean now drops to 5-13 (0-6) on the season, while the Blue Jays move to 15-10 (8-2).
Game One: University of St. Joseph 3, Dean College 2
After just one run being scored after five innings of action, the Bulldogs finally found their rally. Dean trailed 1-0 entering the sixth inning, but sparked a rally when
Emily Kilpatrick (Marion, MA) reached base and scored on a single from
Sydnee Ramos (New Bedford, MA). Ramos would also advance to second on the throw. Moments later,
Xandra Silva (New Britain, CT)Â crossed the plate on a fielder's choice off the bat of her sister,
Liana Silva (New Britain, CT), giving Dean a brief 2-1 lead.
Dean's hopes for a comeback win were dashed in the bottom of the seventh, when the Blue Jays responded with a walk-off, two-run single to center field. Despite strong efforts at the plate and a solid performance from starting pitcher Bryce DeGasparre (Attleboro, MA), the Bulldogs couldn't hold off the Blue Jays' final push. The narrow loss dropped Dean in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) standings.
Game Two: University of St. Joseph 8, Dean College 1
Dean got on the board in the second inning when L. Silva reached base. She eventually came around to score on a double to left by Madison Nereu (Wareham, MA). The Bulldogs' offense picked up five hits in total, with L. Silva and Ramos each collecting two. However, they were unable to convert additional baserunners into runs.
The Blue Jays answered back in the third inning with three runs, including a two-RBI single and a triple to right-center field. The real damage came in the fifth when the Blue Jays erupted for five more runs, fueled by another triple and a string of RBI hits. Starting pitcher Natalie Hayes (Brewster, NY) took the loss despite working through early scoreless frames. Offensively, X. Silva and Ramos led the way, scroing two hits each.Â
The Bulldogs return home on Tuesday, April 15th, hosting Elms College in a 3:30PM and 5:30PM GNACÂ double-header.
