Providence, RI- The Dean College softball team was taken down in both games of their away series versus Johnson & Wales University (RI). The Bulldogs dropped game one by a score of 23-0, and game two by a score of 10-5. Dean now falls to 4-10 (0-4) on the season.
Game One: Johnson & Wales 23, Dean College 0
In the Sunday opener, the Bulldogs were held to just one hit, a single by
Ari Amaral (Attleboro, MA). Meanwhile, the Wildcats took control early with two runs in the first inning, followed by a massive six-run second. The damage continued as JWU added four more in the third and six in the fourth. Dean pitcher
Bryce DeGasparre (Attleboro, MA) took the loss, while JWU's Katie Scheid picked up the win. Despite the large deficit, Dean's defense remained consistent, though they were unable to overcome JWU's offensive barrage.
Game Two: Johnson & Wales 10, Dean College 5
To open game two, the Bulldogs were held scoreless through the first three innings. JWU built a strong lead, starting with a run in the second inning and adding five more in the third. Dean made their push in the fourth inning -
Katie Splaine (Tynsborough, MA) grounded out to bring
Sydnee Ramos (New Bedford, MA) home for their first run of the game, making it 5-1. The Bulldogs' offense continued to find its rhythm in the fifth inning, with DeGasparre driving in a run with a double, followed by RBI hits from
Xandra Silva (New Britain, CT) and
Emily Kilpatrick (Marion, MA).
Unfortunately for the Bulldogs, JWU responded in the fifth inning, scoring an unearned run after a wild pitch to extend their lead to 9-5. Despite the late-game rally, Dean could not close the gap further. Madison Nereu (Wareham, MA) took the loss on the mound for the Bulldogs, while Jill Reed earned the win for the Wildcats. Dean's 5-run inning showed promise, but it wasn't enough to overcome the early damage inflicted by JWU's potent offense.
Four different players recorded two hits each for Dean during the second game (Ramos, X. Silva, DeGasparre, Katrina Lee (Brookline, NH)). With her double in game two, Ramos now lies just one hit away from becoming the first player in program history to reach 100 career hits.
The Bulldogs continue their road trip on Thursday, April 3rd, traveling to Bay Path University for a non-conference double-header at 3:00 and 5:00PM.
