West Hartford, CT.- The Dean College men's basketball team squandered their Wednesday night Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) contest versus the University of Saint Joseph (CT), 93-68. Dean now drops to 13-7 (5-5) on the year, while the Blue Jays move to 15-5 (9-0).
It was a tough first half for the Bulldogs. The team allowed a 5-0 to the Blue Jays to open the contest, and from that point on, Saint Joseph would carry the momentum. Dean was outscored in the first half 51-27, putting themselves in a adverse position heading into the second half. However, there were still plenty of bright spots throughout the first 20 minutes.
Randy Vasquez (Methuen, MA) and
Billy Ray Barnes III (Inglewood, CA) got the scoring started for Dean with two solid baskets. At the 13:20 mark, Dean also began a 10-7 led by the likes of Barnes,
Ja'maine Davenport (Mays Landing, NJ) and Franklie Idlett (Miami, FL). Most of the points on that run were also scored through fouls.
Christian Yeates (Atlanta, GA) got the final points of the first half, giving Dean some momentum heading into the locker room.Â
The second half was much closer, with the scoring only being seperated by one point. Dean nearly doubled their field-goal percentage during the second half which converting on 14 more points than the first half. The Bulldogs opened the second half scoring by going a 10-2 run. The momentum was capped by a sensational dunk by Barnes, bringing Dean closer to a 10-point difference.
Greg Farrow (Milwaukee, WI) became a strong contributer in the second half, scoring on critical occasions to give Dean life. However, as the lead grew for the Blue Jays, the task became tougher. The University of Saint Joseph ran away in the end, winning 93-68.
Davenport led the score sheet for the Bulldogs with 18 points, four rebounds, and a steal. Barnes and Idlett also had double-digit performances, with Idlett leading the team in rebounds with six. Tonight's contest also saw valuable minutes for Captain
Harlan Nichols (Las Vegas, NV) and junior
Xavier Rubio (San Diego, CA).
The Bulldogs are back in action this Saturday at 1PM, facing Eastern Connecticut State University in an out-of-conference contest.Â
