Medford, MA- In the Opening Round of the NCAA Division III Field Hockey Tournament, the Dean College Field Hockey team was defeated by the Tufts University Jumbos by a final score of 0-11. The Bulldogs' season comes to a close, while Tufts advances into the Round of 16 this coming weekend.
Noteworthy Marks:
-Sophomore goalkeeper
Sara Gardner (Hampstead, MD) tied the program's second highest save total in a single game. She made 22 stops against the Jumbos, earning high praise at the national level.
-The Bulldogs were able to secure a penalty corner in the fourth quarter. Prior, the Jumbos had allowed a combined two penalty corner chances in the NESCAC Tournament.
How it Happened:
-Tufts controlled the pace of play for much of the contest. They opened with a statement five goals out of 16 shots taken. This would set the tone for the rest of the game, pushing them into Round of 16.
-The Bulldogs displayed an impressive second quarter, holding Tufts to just one goal. Sophomore
Emily Yazzetti (Mahopac, NY) had a crucial chance in the box as well, barely going wide of the cage. Gardner would also go six of seven in-goal.
-Dean would rally back into the game in the fourth quarter. Both
Jadyn Crowell (Bordentown, NJ) and
Emily Kilpatrick (Marion, MA) would take shots, but both missed wide.
-Senior captain
Sydnee Ramos (New Bedford, MA) would also come close to scoring. She would swipe two passes a midfield, eventually driving towards the box. However, the Tufts defense would stymie Ramos' crossers, intended for
Katrina Lee (Brookline, NH).
-The Jumbos would grab two more scores in the final minutes to seal their opening round victory.
