Dean Defeated by Mitchell in Doubleheader

NEW LONDON, Conn. – April 7, 2024 – The Dean College softball team lost at Mitchell 9-3 and 8-0 (5 inn.) in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) South Division doubleheader on Sunday.

Dean (0-14, 0-4 GNAC South) will host Massachusetts Maritime for a pair on Tuesday afternoon. Mitchell (7-9, 4-0 GNAC South) travels to Salve Regina on Wednesday.

GAME ONE – Mitchell 9, Dean 3

The Mariners broke through in their first at-bat with two runs. Jenna Bennett singled home a run and then scored on a Brooke Whitmarsh RBI triple.

Whitmarsh knocked in another run in the second. Mitchell also plated a run on a bases loaded walk.

In the third, the home team benefited from an error and a wild pitch to score a pair of runs for a 6-0 lead.

Madison Cole tripled in a run and then scored on a groundout to put Mitchell on top 8-0 in the fourth.

Dean got on the board in the fifth with a couple of runs. Junior Katie Splaine (Tyngsborough, Mass.) doubled home pinch-runner Mackenzie Mayo (North Attleboro, Mass.) with the team's first run. Senior Meredith Landers (Littleton, Mass.) then hit a sac fly to score first-year Alyssa Ribarovski (Sydney, Australia) to make the score 8-2.

The Mariners took a 9-2 lead in the bottom of the fifth when Whitmarsh hit her second triple of the game.

Senior Jilian Glynn (Londonderry, N.H.) put a third run across for the Bulldogs with an RBI single in the sixth.

Sophomore Liana Silva (New Britain, Conn.) went 3-for-3 to lead the Bulldog batters. Ribarovski finished with a couple of hits.  

GAME TWO – Mitchell 8, Dean 0 (5 inn.)

Sophomore Sydnee Ramos (New Bedford, Mass.) went 2-for-2 with a stolen base for the Bulldogs.

Mitchell scored a run in the second, three in the fourth and walked off with the win after four runs in the fifth.

Cole knocked in three runs on two hits, while Emily Reynolds also had three RBIs for the Mariners.
