FRANKLIN, Mass. – February 10, 2024 – The Dean College men's basketball team hung on for a triple overtime Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) victory over Rivier, 104-103, Saturday afternoon inside Pieri Gymnasium.
Dean led 103-100 with less than a minute to play in the third extra period. Junior Odaris Cade (Anderson, S.C.) made a step-back three-pointer to pull Rivier even with 31 seconds to go. After an
AJ Weston (Kansas City, Mo.) last second driving effort went wide, senior
Jayden Madise (Palmdale, Calif.) was fouled on his putback attempt with .6 on the clock. He converted the second free throw attempt for the 104-103 win.
The Bulldogs (8-15, 4-8 GNAC) travel to Johnson & Wales on Tuesday for a 7:30 p.m. tip. Rivier (13-10, 5-8 GNAC) will host Mitchell on Tuesday at 5 p.m.
Weston paced the Bulldogs with 32 points. He added seven rebounds, four assists and went 12-for-12 from the free throw line. Madise scored 17 points and hauled in a career-high 20 rebounds for his seventh double-double. Senior
Charles Walker (Princeton, N.C.) added 20 points. Junior
Paris Smith (Chicago, Ill.) also recorded a double-double with 12 points and 15 boards.
Cade, who surpassed 1,000 career points, led all scorers with 33 points. Sophomore Robenson Baguidy (Goffstown, N.H.) tallied 24 points and six assists. Senior Devin Owens (Irvine, Calif.) finished with 21 points, eight rebounds and four blocks.
The Bulldogs led 34-27 at the half, scoring 26 points in the paint. Dean also had a 30-16 advantage on the glass in the first 20 minutes. Cade led Rivier with 12 points, while Madise had 10 for Dean.
The game was tied at 73-73 with 1:31 remaining in regulation before Dean received a pair of free throws from Weston and one from Walker to go in front by three. Owens made a trey with 26 seconds left to tie the game. Dean held for a final shot but could not convert, sending the game to overtime.
In the first overtime, Cade made a three-pointer to put Rivier on top, 85-84, with 1:14 to play. Cade added a free throw for a 2-point lead with eight seconds to go. Weston drove the lane as time was winding down and got a layup off in time that went through the basket for the 86-86 tie and second overtime.
Rivier trailed by a bucket in the waning moments of the second extra session before Nikolas Pignone (Stoneham, Mass.) tied the game with 13 seconds left, 96-96, with a jumper. Dean could not get a shot off in the final stages, sending the game to a third overtime.
