Women's Soccer Bested By Colby-Sawyer In Season Finale, 5-1

NEW LONDON, N.H.- The Dean College Bulldogs fell to the Colby-Sawyer Chargers, 5-1 in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) women's soccer regular season finale on Tuesday. Colby-Sawyer (9-4-6 overall, 7-2-5 GNAC) awaits their fate in the conference playoffs, while Dean's (2-12-3 overall, 1-11-3 GNAC) season concludes.

Charger star Bridget O'Connell scored two goals in the game's opening ten minutes, the first assisted by Kate Vasconcelos, and the second off a penalty kick, to give the hosts an early 2-0 lead. Five minutes before the halftime break, O'Connell added a third, unassisted, to put the Bulldogs in a three goal hole at the half.

Halle Pletzer found her own scoring streak for the hosts, scoring back-to-back goals over the span of five minutes to give Colby-Sawyer a 5-0 lead. Her first goal came unassisted, while the second was assisted by O'Connell. The Bulldogs responded in the 64th minute, ending their season with a flourish when senior Nina Medeiros (Fairhaven, Mass.) scored her second goal of the season off an assist from senior Lea Bettencourt (Peabody, Mass.) to close the gap to 5-1.

Coiby-Sawyer outshot the Bulldogs 46-10 and held a 5-1 edge in corner kicks. Senior goalkepeer Haley Gaunt (Johnston, R.I.) made 22 saves in the game, improving her GNAC-leading tally to 183 on the year. Medeiros' goal was her second of the season and seventh of her career. Bettencourt's assist was her first point of the season.
