FRANKLIN, Mass.- Despite a valiant fight that put a scare into the visiting Albertus Magnus College Falcons, the Dean College Bulldogs fell 2-0 in Tuesday's Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) season finale. Albertus Magnus (10-4-4 overall, 10-1-3 GNAC) awaits their draw in the GNAC conference tournament, while Dean's season ends with a 3-13-1 (2-11-1 GNAC) record.
Before the start of the game, Dean honored three seniors in a senior day celebration:
Andy Martinez (Chelsea, Mass.),
Aydin Medeiros (Fail River, Mass.) and
Liam Santos (New Bedford, Mass.).
Dean controlled possession in the opening minutes, but the Falcons struck on the counter attack, scoring the first goal of the game ten minutes into the contest when
Julius McNeil punched home a back-post feed from
Gabriel Paglia. Chances abounded for both squads in the rest of the half, but neither side broke through and the teams entered the half at 1-0. Albertus outshot Dean 17-3 in the first half, but goalkeeper
Jake Godwin (Norwalk, Conn.) was up to the task, making eight first half saves en route to 11 on the game.
Dean threatened consistently in the second half, registering eight shots and holding a 6-1 edge in corner kicks. The Bulldogs best chance came off a lob from Medeiros that entered the box and set up
Jake Richard (Townsend, Mass.) for a header opportunity. When Richard was fouled by Albertus Magnus keeper
David Lucero, senior
Sean Doherty (Chelmsford, Mass.) had a chance to tie the game on a penalty kick. The try was turned aside, however, by Lucero, on a diving save, preserving the shutout and thwarting the Bulldogs best scoring chance of the day.
Albertus added an insurance goal in the 87th minute, putting the game away when McNeil again tapped in a cross, this time from teammate
Aiden Coelho, who had been threatening all game on the wing.
Doherty and Richard both registered two shots, while junior
Chris Tunley (Las Vegas, Nev.) and first-year
Clay Tyler (Attleboro, Mass.) chipped in two as well.
The decision is Dean's seventh loss by two goals or less. The Bulldogs finished 3-5 at Longley Athletic Complex.
