Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men's Soccer Blanked By Blue Jays, 3-0

FRANKLIN, Mass.- The University of Saint Joseph (Conn.) Blue Jays defeated the Dean College Bulldogs 3-0 in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action on Tuesday at Longley Athletic Complex. A fast paced game that included over 50 shots between the two teams, the Blue Jays took advantage of their opportunities, scoring once in the first half, and two more in the second half to earn the victory.

Henry McGarrah V scored the game's opening goal, a nifty backwards flip after a touch pass from Damir Cirkovic beat the Bulldogs keeper Jake Godwin (Norwalk. Conn.) to give the visitors 1-0 lead 11 minutes into the action. Dean had eight first-half shots, with four on goal, but could not get past Blue Jay keeper Will Slayton. The teams entered the break with the score 1-0.

USJ scored three minutes in the second half to extend their lead to 2-0 on a goal from Justin Cardinale. Cardinale collected a cross from McGarrah that had been redirected by teammate Griffin Neal and buried it into the bottom corner for the goal.

Dean's Brian Allen (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) countered with a dangerous strike, angling for the top corner from just inside the box, but Slayton jumped and turned it aside with a sprawling save, keeping the lead at two. Moments later, the Blue Jays added another goal, this one from Nicholas Simpson, assisted by Landon Coehlo, to put the game out of reach.

Godwin finished with 11 saves in 90 minutes of action, including an incredible diving stop on a USJ penalty shot. Senior Sean Doherty (Chelmsford,Mass.) led the Bulldogs with three shots.

The loss drops Dean to 2-6 (1-4 GNAC) on the year. USJ, winners of six straight, improved to 6-3-1 (5-0-1 GNAC).

Next up for the Bulldogs is a road contest on Saturday at Johnson & Wales at 3:00 pm.
