FRANKLIN, Mass. – September 6, 2023 – Trailing 3-0 with 26 minutes left to play, the Dean College women's soccer team stormed back to score four times and earn a 4-3 Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) victory over Anna Maria.
The Bulldogs (2-1, 1-0 GNAC) welcomes new GNAC foe Mitchell on Saturday at noon for the fourth straight home game to begin the season. Anna Maria (0-2-1, 0-1 GNAC) continues its four-game road trip on Saturday with a noon start at Colby-Sawyer.
Dean began the contest with an advantage in possession, but Anna Maria turned things around when they put a goal on the board in the 14th minute. Junior Riley Michaud (Clinton, Mass.) took a shot from the left side that the Dean goalie got a hand on to save, but the ball went right to junior Olympia Myers (Grimsby, Ont.) who deposited her second goal of the season.
Michaud found the back of the net in the 25th minute to give the AMCATS a 2-0 lead. The play was set up by a pair of quick passes by senior Samantha Rodriguez (Corona, Calif.) and sophomore Abigail Smith (Hanscom, Mass.) who each got credited with an assist.
Less than three minutes later, the visitors took a commanding 3-0 lead when Macy Hutchinson (Oxford, Mass.) sent a through ball to Smith who scored her first of the season.
Dean regrouped at halftime and came out strong once again but was kept off the scoreboard by good goaltending.
The home team finally broke through in the 65th minute on junior
Lisette Ayala's (Chicopee, Mass.) first collegiate goal. First-year
Kacie Consolini (Stafford Springs, Conn.) set up the chance with a nice pass into the box.
In the 77th minute, senior
Jazzy Sztyler-Magee (Burlington, Conn.) pulled the Bulldogs to within a goal when she broke away from the Anna Maria defenders and ripped a high bending shot into the far corner of the net.
The Bulldogs found an equalizer in the 85th minute. Sztyler-Magee notched her fifth goal of the season on a redirection from a pass into the goal mouth by sophomore
Miro McIntyre Clere (Sydney, Australia). The assist is McIntyre Clere's first collegiate point.
Less than a minute later and with only 5:04 to play in the game, junior
Lea Bettencourt (Peabody, Mass.) sent a corner kick into the box that ricocheted off a couple of players before finding the foot of junior
Nina Medeiros (Fairhaven, Mass.) for the game-winning score.
Junior
Haley Gaunt (Johnston, R.I.) earned her second win of the season for the Bulldogs with nine saves. Anna Maria keeper Kortney Clark (Schenectady, N.Y.) had five stops in the loss.
