Men's Volleyball Wins Season Finale at Colby-Sawyer for First GNAC Victory

NEW LONDON, N.H. – April 8, 2023 – After falling to Regis (25-14, 25-10, 25-11) to begin Saturday's tri-match, the Dean College men's volleyball team swept Colby-Sawyer (25-19, 27-25, 25-18) to record the program's first Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) victory.

The Bulldogs end their season with a 4-20 overall record and a 1-15 mark in the GNAC.

DEAN 3, COLBY-SAWYER 0 -25-19, 27-25, 25-18

Senior Tyler Martins (East Providence, R.I.) posted nine kills, seven digs and four assists to lead the Bulldogs. Junior Aaron Fonseca (Cranston, R.I.) tallied eight kills and eight digs. First-year Hunter Armitage (Westerly, R.I.) registered 20 assists and a match best nine digs. Senior Nick Giglietti (East Haven, Conn.) finished with four digs. Sophomore Nunu Jackson (Fresno, Calif.) added five kills on .556 hitting.

Sophomore Isaac Davies (Hinesburg, Vt.) led Colby-Sawyer with 16 kills and eight digs. Junior Austin Ponsness (Queen Creek, Ariz.) added seven kills and three aces.  

Play in the first set was back and forth for the first several rallies. With the score tied at 9-9, the Bulldogs went on an 11-3 run and never looked back. The Chargers made a late push, but a Martins kill gave Dean the 25-19 first set victory.

The second set featured 15 ties. Dean was able to tie the score at 23-23 on another Martins kill, but Colby-Sawyer scored the next point on a Davies kill. Facing set point, Fonseca came through with a kill to tie the score at 24-24. The Chargers took a lead on the ensuing rally with an Aiden Fortier kill. A service error knotted the set once again. After a Colby-Sawyer attack error, Martins stepped up again to finish the set with a kill to secure the 27-25 win.

The Bulldogs carried the momentum into the third and raced out to a 10-4 advantage, capped by a Jackson kill. Colby-Sawyer chipped away and eventually turned the tables to take a 15-14 lead. Dean regrouped to answer with an 8-0 run, capped by a Nick Carlson (Warwick, R.I.) kill. The Bulldogs clinched the set (25-18) and the match when junior Saski Sayue (Providence, R.I.) recorded his lone kill of the match.  

REGIS 3, DEAN 0 – 25-14, 25-10, 25-11

Regis hit .354 as a team to help secure the 3-0 match victory.

Joseph Perez led the Pride with 13 kills, a .550 hitting percentage, six service aces, and seven digs. John Nangle contributed seven kills on a .545 hitting percentage as Tyrell Bucasas distributed 34 assists.

Tyler Martins, Nick Carlson and Aaron Fonseca each had three kills to lead Dean. Fonseca added a team best five digs.
