BOSTON, Mass. – April 28, 2023 – The sixth seed Dean College women's lacrosse team fell to third seed Simmons, 15-2, in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) tournament quarterfinal matchup on Friday evening at Daly Field.
Dean ends its season with program records in overall wins (9-9) and conference wins (7-6), while also becoming the first Dean women's program to make a GNAC tournament appearance. Simmons (14-4) advances to the GNAC semifinals next week.
Sophomore
Haley Gaunt (Johnston, R.I.) scored both of Dean's goals Friday. Senior
Maire Brown (Huntington, N.Y.) collected a game best seven draw controls. Senior
Allie Bezio (Wellfleet, Mass.) added an assist. Sophomore
Nina Medeiros (Fairhaven, Mass.) finished with three caused turnovers, two ground balls and two draw controls.
First-year goalie
Allie Stockwell (Burrillville, R.I.) had eight saves and picked up an assist on one of Gaunt's goals.
Simmons received five goals from Abby Stoller. Frida Turriza contributed three goals and an assist, while Lauren Whitman chipped in with two goals and two assists.
The Sharks outscored the Bulldogs 5-0 in the first quarter and eventually went on top by a 10-0 score with 7:44 left in the second quarter.
With less than two minutes to go in the half, Gaunt finished a pass from Bezio to record the program's first GNAC tournament goal.
Simmons added two goals to the lead in the third quarter for a 13-1 advantage.
In the fourth, the Sharks opened the scoring with a goal by Kayla Boulas. The Bulldogs put a second goal on the board when Stockwell sent a long pass over the defense to Gaunt who sprinted towards the net and tallied her second of the game. Simmons would tack on another goal for the 15-2 final.
