STANDISH, Maine – April 28, 2023 – The fifth seed Dean College men's lacrosse team upset fourth seed Saint Joseph's, 15-9, in Friday night's Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) tournament quarterfinal.
Tonight's win marks the first GNAC tournament victory by a Dean program.
The Bulldogs, who avenged an 11-10 overtime loss to the Monks in the regular season, improve to 10-5 and advance to Tuesday's GNAC semifinals against the winner of Saturday's game between top seed Emmanuel and eighth seed Norwich. Saint Joseph's ends its season at 10-8.
Junior
Diego Alvarez-Segee (Saugus, Mass.) scored seven times on 15 shots to lead the Bulldogs. Sophomore
Owen Brine (Lebanon, N.H.) had three points on two goals and an assist, while senior
Greg Centeio (Fairhaven, Mass.) had a goal and two assists. Junior
Tyler Benedetto (Jupiter, Fla.) had a good day in the faceoff circle winning 18-of-27 to go with a goal and a game best 15 ground balls. Junior
Alec Speirs (Old Lyme, Conn.) dished out three assists to go with a goal. Senior
Anthony List (Charlton, Mass.) notched his first goal.
The Monks received a hat trick from Will Levesque (Marlow, N.H.). Max Lacy (Salisbury, N.H.) and Calvin Heline (Amesbury, Mass.) added two goals apiece.

James Rollins (Old Lyme, Conn.) earned the win with 12 saves. SJC goalie Brannon Gilbert (Gray, Maine) suffered the loss with nine goals allowed and four saves in 35 minutes. Liam Greene (Mansfield, Mass.) made six saves and allowed six goals in the final 25 minutes.
Dean was on top 2-0 after the first quarter with goals from Brine and Alvarez-Segee.
A man-up goal by
Ryan Clunie (North Andover, Mass.) gave Dean a 3-0 advantage early in the second. Saint Joseph's answered with a pair to cut the deficit to one. The Bulldogs responded to close the half with goals by Alvarez-Segee and Centeio to take a 5-2 lead after 30 minutes.
Alvarez-Segee scored 37 seconds in the third quarter for a 6-2 lead. Benedetto took the ensuing faceoff the length of the field and ripped a shot past the Monks goalie eight seconds later for a 7-2 lead. Another Alvarez-Segee goal put the Bulldogs on top by six, just over two minutes into the third frame.
The Monks would score twice in less than 40 seconds to begin chipping away. Alvarez-Segee settled the Bulldogs down with his fifth of the game at 10:01 of the third. Saint Joseph's then controlled the action for the next six minutes to begin the comeback. The Monks rattled off five straight goals to tie the score at 9-9. List then answered for the Bulldogs with 1:35 on the clock to give Dean the lead back heading into the fourth.
Alvarez-Segee took over in the early stages of the fourth by scoring a couple of times to stave off any attempt of a Saint Joseph's rally. Brine and
Chris Rivera (Glastonbury, Conn.) added a couple of late goals as the Bulldogs outscored the Monks 5-0 in the fourth en route to the 15-9 victory.
