Dean and Norwich Split GNAC Twin Bill

FRANKLIN, Mass. – April 15, 2023 – The Dean College baseball team split a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) doubleheader with the Norwich Cadets on Saturday afternoon. The Bulldogs took game one 2-1, while Norwich won game two 15-5 in eight innings.

Dean (6-21, 3-7 GNAC) hosts Anna Maria tomorrow at noon. Norwich (8-16, 2-8 GNAC) returns home to host Lasell on Sunday at 1 p.m.

GAME ONE – Dean 2, Norwich 1

The Bulldogs plated a pair in the bottom of the third when senior Brian Dovidio (Ramsey, N.J.) scored on an error and sophomore Seth Cruz (East Freetown, Mass.) came around on an RBI ground out by senior Brayden McLaughlin (Forest Grove, Ore.)

Norwich threatened in the seventh when freshman Geffen Franus (Leesburg, Va.) tripled in the Cadets' first run of the game. Dean first-year pitcher Mason Neumann (Middletown, Conn.) stranded him at third after a couple of strikeouts to end the game.

Neumann earned the complete game victory with one run allowed on four hits and struck out six.

Junior John Luchsinger (Durham, N.H.) tossed three scoreless innings of relief for the Cadets with four strikeouts.

Dovidio had two hits for the Bulldogs, while sophomore Brock Carpenter (East Berlin, Pa.) had a couple of knocks to lead Norwich. 

GAME TWO – Norwich 15, Dean 5 (8 inn.)

The Cadets struck for five first-inning runs to begin the second game. Franus knocked in a pair with a double to the right center gap and senior Zeb Perreault (Chelsea, Vt.) had a two-run single to give Norwich the early lead.

Norwich added a run in the third on a sac fly by junior Tyler Callahan (Arlington, Mass.).

In the fourth, the Cadets went on top 7-0 on an RBI double by senior Hayden Roberge (Middlesex, Vt.). A couple of batters later, Franus sent the ball over the left center fence for a two-run homer for a 9-0 lead.

Dean got on the board in the fifth with four runs. Sophomore Cam Watkins (East Haddam, Conn.) scored on a wild pitch after reaching on a single. Sophomore James Galati (Eastchester, N.Y.) brought in senior Andrew Sullivan (Agawam, Mass.) with an RBI single to right. Dovidio then singled home senior DeMarcus King (Austin, Texas). Galati scored the Bulldogs' fourth run on a McLaughlin RBI ground out.

Norwich answered in its next at-bat with three runs. Senior PJ Morales (Bakersfield, Calif.) plated a pair with a triple down the right field line. Morales then scored on a sac fly from senior Ryland Richardson (Windsor, Vt.).

In the eighth, the Cadets tacked on three runs for a 15-4 lead. Franus and sophomore Jakob Hayes (Arlington, Texas) each had an RBI single in the inning. Callahan also knocked in a run with a sac fly to left.  

Watkins hit a sac fly to left in the Dean half of the eighth to make it 15-5, but that would be the final score.

Sophomore Jordan Talbot (Belchertown, Mass.) picked up his first win of the season for Norwich with 5 IP, 4 ER, 6 H and 1 K.
