Bulldogs Hang on for 80-74 Win at Framingham State

FRAMINGHAM, Mass. – November 27, 2023 – The Dean College men's basketball team earned an 80-74 road win at Framingham State on Monday night.

The Bulldogs (3-3) begin a 3-game homestand on Wednesday with a 5 p.m. tip against Eastern Connecticut State. Framingham State (3-4) hosts Salve Regina on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.

Dean senior AJ Weston (Kansas City, Mo.) scored 21 points to go with eight rebounds and five assists to lead the Bulldogs. Sophomore Moussa Berete (Richmond, Va.) was next on the team with 16 points. Junior Tyler Newsom (Pendleton, Ore.) scored 13 points on 6-9 shooting and grabbed eight rebounds. Senior Jayden Madise (Palmdale, Calif.) finished with 12 points and eight boards, while senior Charles Walker (Princeton, N.C.) also reached double figures with 12 points on 5-6 shooting.

Josh Saint Jean led the Rams with 21 points on 8-13 shooting, while Harrison Boadu made 8-12 shots for 20 points. Saint Jean also added 10 rebounds.

The first half was tightly contest for the first several minutes as Dean held a slim 12-10 lead, 9:30 into the game. The Bulldogs then went on a 10-2 run, including a pair of baskets by Walker, to take a comfortable 22-12 lead with six minutes to play in the first. The Rams made the next two buckets to cut the deficit to 22-16 with 4:10 remaining. Dean responded by finishing the half with a 12-4 spurt, receiving five points apiece from Walker and Weston, to lead 34-20 at the break.

The Dean defense held Framingham State to 17.9% from the floor in the first. The Rams had a 28-25 edge on the glass, but the Bulldogs made twice as many shots as the home team (14-7) for the 14-point advantage at the half. Six Bulldogs found the scoring column with Weston leading the way with nine points and four assists. Walker had eight points.

After scoring 20 points in the first half, Framingham State put 22 on the board in the opening six minutes of the second half to pull within 47-42 and force a Dean timeout.

The Rams came all the way back to tie the game at 66-66 with 4:26 left after a pair of free throws by Saint Jean. The score would be tied again at 68-68 before Walker and Weston made two jumpers in a row to give the Bulldogs a 4-point lead with 2:15 on the clock. Saint Jean made two more free throws before Newsom scored back-to-back buckets to push the Dean lead back to four with 1:23 to play. A late steal and layup by Thompson pulled the Rams within 76-74 with less than 25 seconds to go. Weston would make all four of his free throw attempts in the waning moments to secure the 80-74 road win for Dean.

The Bulldogs ended the game with a 46-40 margin in rebounding.
