Men's Soccer Bows Out in GNAC Quarterfinals at Saint Joseph

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – October 28, 2023 – The sixth seed Dean College men's soccer team fell at third seed University of Saint Joseph (Conn.), 3-1, in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) tournament quarterfinal matchup Saturday afternoon.

The Bulldogs end the season at 9-5-3 after appearing in the GNAC postseason for the first time. USJ, the reigning GNAC champion, improves to 13-1-3 and will travel to second seed Johnson & Wales for a semifinal match on Tuesday.

The Blue Jays opened the scoring in the 26th minute when Matthew Dima beat the wall and the keeper from the top of the box on a free kick.

USJ led 1-0 at the break in an evenly played first half. The home team had a 9-8 edge in shots, while Dean held a 3-2 advantage in corner kicks.

In the 67th minute, the Blue Jays went in front by a pair when Nolan Clack connected a pass to Nicholas Simpson who put home his third goal of the season.

USJ went on top by three with a goal by Henry McGarrah in the 75th minute. The play was set up once again by Clack.

Dean got on the scoreboard in the 84th minute on a goal from senior Juliano Silva (Cumberland, R.I.), his second of the season. Sophomore Jude Munson (Winchester, Mass.) notched his first collegiate point with the assist.

The Bulldogs had a couple of more shots on target in the waning moments but were turned aside by the USJ goalie.

Alberto Gonzalez Del Rio (Madrid, Spain) suffered the loss in 86 minutes of work and four saves. He finished the season with an 8-3-2 record. Sophomore Jake Godwin (Norwalk, Conn.) played the final four minutes for the Bulldogs.

Jose Miguel Garcia Martin made six saves to earn the win for USJ.

Each team ended the contest with 15 shots and the Blue Jays had a 7-5 margin in corner kicks.
