Women's Basketball Drops Road Game at Johnson & Wales

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – January 31, 2023 – The Dean College women's basketball team dropped a road Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) game at Johnson & Wales (JWU), 79-27, Tuesday evening at the Wildcat Center.

Dean (0-18, 0-13 GNAC) will play its second game in three days with a 5:30 p.m. game on Thursday at Saint Joseph's College of Maine. JWU (8-11, 5-7 GNAC) travels to Albertus Magnus on Thursday for a 5:30 p.m. tip with the Falcons.

Sophomore Cat Thomas (Woodbridge, Conn.) tallied six points, four rebounds and two steals to lead the Bulldogs. Sophomore Tori Viau (Johnston, R.I.) added five points, while senior Allie Bezio (Wellfleet, Mass.) scored four points and corralled a team best eight rebounds.

Freshman Mikayla Caruso (Newton, N.J.) paced the Wildcats with 16 points, eight rebounds and four blocks. Junior Sarah Wisniewski (Naugatuck, Conn.) added 14 points. Junior Peyton Oliver (Ramsey, N.J.) posted a double-double of 14 points and 17 rebounds to go with six steals and four blocks. Senior Peyton Ryan (Nashua, N.H.) was the fourth JWU player in double figures with 10 points.  

1st Quarter
  • Johnson & Wales led 21-9 after 10 minutes thanks to 9-of-17 shooting.
  • The Bulldogs made 6-of-8 from the free throw line, while first-year Carly Rettberg (Haddam, Conn.) hit a trey to account for the Dean points.
  • Each team grabbed nine rebounds in the quarter.
  • Graduate student Shania Springer (Bay Shore, N.Y.) led the Wildcats with six points.
2nd Quarter
  • The Wildcats pushed their lead to 38-13 at the half with a 17-4 scoring margin in the second.
  • Thomas and Viau scored a couple for Dean.
  • JWU received seven points from Ryan and six from Oliver.  
3rd Quarter
  • The home team outscored Dean 22-10 in the third.
  • Five different Dean players scored two points in the frame.
  • The Bulldogs made all six free throw attempts (14-of-16 through three quarters).
4th Quarter
  • JWU ended the game with a 19-4 scoring discrepancy in the final quarter.
