Men's Lacrosse Upset by Johnson & Wales in GNAC Quarterfinal Overtime Thriller, 12-11

FRANKLIN, Mass. – April 30, 2022 – The fourth-seeded Dean College men's lacrosse team lost a 12-11 Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Tournament Quarterfinal overtime thriller to fifth-seeded Johnson & Wales Saturday afternoon at Grant Field.

Dean ends its season at 10-5. JWU improves to 10-7 and earns a spot in the semifinals against top seed Norwich on Wednesday.

Dean sophomore Diego Alvarez-Segee (Saugus, Mass.) led the Bulldogs with five goals and an assist. Sophomore Alec Speirs (Old Lyme, Conn.) scored twice to go with an assist, while freshman Jason Richard (Holden, Mass.) added a hat trick.  

The Wildcats were led by Mike Muench's (Maplewood, N.J.) four goals. Senior Joe McIntyre (Ballston Lake, N.Y.) recorded three goals and an assist. Junior Mike Catuosco (Commack, N.Y.) won 16-of-26 faceoffs to go with 13 ground balls.  

Dean senior Alexander Govoni (Lakeville, Mass.) made a season-high 23 saves. JWU first-year goalie Trent Madigan (Ayer, Mass.) allowed six goals and made four saves, while first-year Chris April (Mansfield, Mass.) had seven saves and allowed five goals.  

The Bulldogs erased a 10-6 deficit late in the third by scoring twice to end the frame. The team carried the momentum into the fourth and scored three more times to take an 11-10 lead with 1:44 remaining. After Catuosco won the ensuing faceoff, the Wildcats called timeout to set up a play. Muench delivered the equalizer with 1:23 showing on the clock.

The game entered overtime with Dean taking the faceoff and possession. After a Bulldogs turnover, JWU first-year Donny McInnis (North Haven, Conn.) sent the Wildcats on to the next round with his lone goal of the game, 58 seconds into the extra session.
