Baseball Sweeps Colby-Sawyer on Senior Day

FRANKLIN, Mass. – April 30, 2022 – The Dean College baseball team won both ends of Saturday's Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) doubleheader finale. The Bulldogs won game one 10-6 and walked off with a 4-3 game two victory in nine innings.  

Dean ends its season at 9-27 overall and 7-11 in the GNAC. Colby-Sawyer finishes the year at 8-29 overall and 4-14 in conference.  

Prior to the game, Dean honored its 17 seniors – Ethan Bernardo (Pawtucket, R.I.), Josh Cerretani (Peabody, Mass.), Griffin Connelly (Easton, Pa.), Austin Crowley (Chicopee, Mass.), Ryan Gallagher (Methuen, Mass.), Sam Grandfield (Duxbury, Vt.), Dan Lilja (Lynn, Mass.), Eric Lucey (Winchester, Mass.), Tyler McAloon (Berkley, Mass.), Thomas Muizulis Jr. (Waltham, Mass.), Kyle Obst (Tewksbury, Mass.), Greg Palais (Valhalla, N.Y.), Jesse Rodriguez Jr. (Fontana, Calif.), Chaz Stolba (Trumbull, Conn.), Ben Tate (South Burlington, Vt.), Matty Troy (Norwalk, Conn.) and Tommy Troy Jr. (Norwalk, Conn.). The team also presented President Rooney with a commemorative bat for all that she has done for the College in her 27 years of service.

GAME 1 – Dean 10, Colby-Sawyer 6

Matty Troy crossed the plate on a wild pitch to put Dean on top in the first.

In the second, the Bulldogs took a 5-0 lead with RBI hits from Troy and Ryan Gallagher, while Josh Cerretani knocked in a pair with a double to left.

Dean continued to increase its lead by scoring three times in the fifth. Dan Lilja brought in Cerretani before Kyle Obst connected for a two-run double to left.

Colby-Sawyer got on the board in the sixth in an RBI triple from freshman Jesse MacGlashing (Pittsfield, N.H.).

The Bulldogs immediately responded with a two-run double by Lilja in the bottom of the sixth to give Dean a comfortable 10-1 lead.

The Chargers didn't go quietly in the seventh as they made things interesting scoring five times before running out of outs. Junior Ian Turpel (Cohasset, Mass.) had a bases clearing triple in the innings.

Troy, Lilja and Obst each had a pair of hits to lead the Dean batters.

MacGlashing and Brady Holmes (West Yarmouth, Mass.) had two hits apiece to lead the Chargers.

Tyler McAloon earned the win for Dean with 6.2 innings, six runs on eight hits and five strikeouts.

Game 2 – Dean 4, Colby-Sawyer 3 (9 innings)

The Chargers raced out to a 3-0 lead to begin the game. Junior Cooper O'Brien (Vergennes, Vt.) had a two-run single to right. Colby-Sawyer then scored a run on an error.

Dean got a run back in its first at-bat with an RBI from Gallagher.

The teams then played four scoreless innings before the Bulldogs tied the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the sixth. With two outs, Tommy Troy tripled in Thomas Muizulis Jr. and then scored the tying run when Matty Troy beat out an infield single.

Colby-Sawyer loaded the bases in the top of the seventh, but Eric Lucey came on in relief to induce a fly out and end the threat.

In the bottom of the ninth, Matty Troy began the frame with another infield hit. He went to second when Brian Dovidio (Ramsey, N.J.) beat out a bunt. Gallagher then stepped up to the plate and delivered a single to right to bring home Troy with the winning run.

Lucey earned his first win with 2.1 shutout innings of relief. Connelly started the game and struck out 10 in 6.2 innings.

Matty Troy and Tommy Troy each had two hits in the game for Dean.

O'Brien and Griffin Wheeler (Penacook, N.H.) had two hits apiece for Colby-Sawyer.

Erik Rohs (Lovettsville, Va.) was saddled with the loss after surrendering one run in two innings out of the bullpen.
