FRANKLIN, Mass. – April 15, 2022 – The Dean College softball team dropped both ends of Friday's Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) doubleheader against Simmons. The Sharks took game one 9-2 and game two 18-3 in five innings.
Dean (2-17, 1-9 GNAC) is scheduled to host Johnson & Wales on Thursday at 3 p.m. Simmons (15-10-1, 6-2 GNAC) travels to Norwich on Wednesday for a doubleheader against the Cadets at 2 p.m.
GAME ONE – Simmons 9, Dean 2
Simmons raced out to a 3-0 lead in the first after a bases loaded walk and a two-run single by senior Maddie Castigliego (Bristol, R.I.).
The Sharks went in front 9-0 after scoring six times in the fourth. Graduate student Emma Barbella (Littleton, Mass.) hit a solo home run and junior Sam Barr (Harwich, Mass.) knocked in a pair with a double to the gap.
Dean got a pair back in the bottom of the fifth on an error and an RBI single from first-year
Shirley Chan (Kowloon, Hong Kong), but that would end the scoring as Simmons earned the 9-2 win.
Castigliego earned the win for Simmons with a complete game. She gave up two unearned runs on five hits and struck out 11. She also went 3-for-4 at the plate with three RBIs.
Senior Allie Mulhern (Westford, Mass.) was a perfect 4-for-4 with two runs for the Sharks.
Junior
Zoe Coleman (Warwick, R.I.) threw three innings of scoreless relief for the Bulldogs.
Junior
Sari Albury (Nassau, Bahamas) led the Bulldogs with a 2-for-3 effort at the plate.
GAME TWO – Simmons 18, Dean 3 (5 inn.)
Each team scored a run in the first. Simmons sophomore Jordyn Rubin (Lewiston, Maine) knocked in a run with a double to right center, while Albury had a run-scoring double for the Bulldogs.
Simmons put three across in the second to take a 4-1 lead. Barr had an RBI double and senior Alex Morang (Windham, Maine) brought home two teammates with a single to right center.
In the top of the third, Simmons added to the lead, 7-1, with a run on a passed ball and two on a blast by Barr over the left field fence. Dean got a run back in the bottom half on a
Meredith Landers (Littleton, Mass.) double that scored Chan.
In the fourth, graduate student Christie Bott (Seaford, N.Y.) put the Sharks on top 9-1 with a two-run home run to left center. Morang then knocked in a pair with a double to left and later scored on a Mulhern single to make the score 12-2.
For the second inning in a row, Bott deposited a two-run homer over the left field fence to push the Simmons lead to 14-2. Barr tacked on a couple more runs with a single to center. She later scored on a Mulhern triple to give the Sharks a 17-2 lead. Mulhern scored on a double by first-year Raya Anderson (Rollinsford, N.H.).
In the bottom of the fifth for Dean,
Sari Albury hit a solo home run to left center, but Simmons won 18-3.
Morang, Mulhern, Rubin and Barr each finished with three hits for the Sharks.
Castigliego got her second win of the afternoon with five innings of work.
Chan went 2-for-3 with two runs for the Bulldogs. Albury also was 2-for-3 with two RBIs.
