FRANKLIN, Mass. – April 21, 2022 – The Dean College softball team was defeated by Johnson & Wales (JWU) in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) doubleheader Thursday afternoon.
JWU won the first game 14-3 and took game two 11-1 behind a no-hitter from sophomore pitcher Sage Borkowski (Oxford, Conn.).
Dean (2-19, 1-11 GNAC) will host Emmanuel on Saturday at 1 p.m. and celebrate senior day. JWU (27-5, 8-2 GNAC) returns home on Sunday to host Regis at noon.
GAME ONE – JWU 14, Dean 3
JWU scored two runs in the first on an RBI single by sophomore Julia Huzi (Trumbull, Conn.) and a solo shot by senior Kaelani Gamble (Vancouver, Wash.).
The Bulldogs got a run back in their first at-bat on an RBI single from junior
Gianna Bencivengo (White Plains, N.Y.).
The Wildcats plated a run in the third on a single to left by Hailey Erickson (Calimesa, Calif.).
In the top of the fourth, senior Megan Antaya (Somerset, Mass.) had an RBI groundout. Huzi later followed with a run-scoring single to put JWU on top by four. The Wildcats added to their lead with two outs when Gamble knocked in a pair with a single to center to make the score 7-1.
JWU put the game away with seven runs in the top of the fifth. First-year Mackenzie Clee (Warminster, Pa.) had a two-run single in the inning.
The Bulldogs scored a couple in the bottom of the fifth on a
Jaylee Martinez (Pawtucket, R.I.) RBI double and an
Alex Marie (Danvers, Mass.) RBI single.
In addition to a 2-for-3 effort at the plate with two RBIs and three runs, Clee earned the win with a complete game. She gave up two earned runs on five hits and struck out eight.
Erickson finished 4-for-4 with three RBIs for the Wildcats.
Five Bulldogs each had a hit.
GAME TWO – JWU 11, Dean 1
The Wildcats struck first again in game two with a two-run double by senior Jill Pulek (Cheshire, Conn.) in their first at-bat.
Like game one, Dean came back with a run in the bottom half of the first, this time on an error.
In the top of the second, Gamble belted a grand slam to put JWU in front 6-1.
JWU took a 9-1 lead in the third on a pair of RBI singles and a sac fly.
Clee knocked in a run with a double to left in the top of the fifth. She then scored on a sac fly from Huzi to put the Wildcats on top 11-1.
Sage Borkowski allowed one unearned run on no hits and two walks. She struck out three and faced 18 batters.
Clee went 4-for-4 with three runs and two RBI.
