NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Dean College softball team played a pair of games for the second day in a row at the Fastpictch Dreams Spring Classic in North Myrtle Beach.
The Bulldogs were outsluggged by Fitchburg State 19-16 in the first game and then fell to Saint Elizabeth, 10-6, in the second game.
Dean (0-4) will resume play on Thursday with games against Gettysburg and Cazenovia.
FITCHBURG STATE 19, DEAN 16
Dean grabbed a 9-0 advantage after two innings of play.
Bridget McDonough had the big hit when she knocked in a pair with a single to help the Bulldogs score seven run in the second.
Fitchburg State answered in the top half of the third with five runs to pull within four, 9-5.
The Bulldogs went in front 14-9 in the bottom of the fourth, but Fitchburg State responded with seven runs in the top of the fifth to take a 16-14 advantage.
After
Alex Marie knocked in a run for the Bulldogs in the bottom of the fifth, the Falcons added three runs in the sixth to go on top 19-15.
Gianna Bencivengo had an RBI double in the bottom of the sixth to make the score 19-16, but that's where the score would stand after a scoreless seventh frame.
Bencivengo finished with a 3-for-5 effort with 3 RBIs, while
Shirley Chan also had three hits to go with two RBIs and four runs.
SAINT ELIZABETH 10, DEAN 6
Sari Albury put Dean on top with an RBI single in the top of the first.
Saint Elizabeth scored four times in the second and once in the third to take a 5-1 lead.
The Bulldogs came within a run by plating three runs in the top of the fourth.
Meredith Landers knocked in
Jaylee Martinez, while
Alex Marie doubled in Landers and
Sarah Graeff.
The Eagles responded with a two-run double in the bottom half of the fourth to go on top 7-4.
After a Bencivengo RBI groundout in the top of the fifth, Saint Elizabeth added to its lead with three runs in the bottom for a 10-5 advantage.
Marie knocked in a run on another double in the sixth for the Bulldogs, but that would be the end of the scoring with Saint Elizabeth hanging on for the 10-6 win.
Marie finished 3-for-4 with three doubles and three RBIs to lead Dean. Albury and Martinez each had a pair of hits.
