NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – March 7, 2022 – The Dean College softball team began the 2022 season with a pair of games in North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina at the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic. Cedar Crest (2-2) defeated the Bulldogs, 9-3. Dean then fell to Penn State Mont Alto, 12-4.
Dean (0-2) will continue its trip with games tomorrow against Fitchburg State at 3:30 p.m. and Saint Elizabeth at 5:30 p.m.
Cedar Crest 9, Dean 3
The Falcons put five runs across in the first inning and never looked back. Renee Snyder knocked in a pair with a single up the middle.
Dean got on the board in the second and then scored two in the third when junior
Sari Albury (Nassau, Bahamas) hit a two-run homer to left center.
Cedar Crest retook a comfortable lead in the fourth by scoring four runs to go on top 9-3, which would be the final. Delaney VanBuskirk had a two-run single to right in the inning.
First-year
Jessica Stewart (Banks, Ore.) took the loss for the Bulldogs with 3 IP, 6H, 5 R (4 ER). Senior
Shelby Smith (Southwick, Mass.) tossed 2.1 innings of two-hit shutout relief for the Bulldogs. Lillian Boltz earned the win with a complete game. She recorded eight strikeouts and allowed three runs on six hits.
Dean First-year
Shirley Chan (Kowloon, Hong Kong) recorded her first collegiate hit and scored a run. Junior
Gianna Bencivengo (White Plains, N.Y.) went 2-for-3.
Penn State Mont Alto 12, Dean 4
Bencivengo continued her hot start with an RBI double to put Dean on top 1-0 in the first.
Penn State erupted for five runs in the bottom of the first to take control of the game.
The Bulldogs put a run across in the second on a
Madison Mayo (North Attleboro, Mass.) RBI single, but once again the Nittany Lions responded with a pair in their at-bat to take a 7-2 lead after two innings.
Penn State scored twice in the third and one in the fourth to go on top 10-2.
Bencivengo pulled the Bulldogs to within 10-4 by knocking in a pair with a double in the fifth.
The Nittany Lions ended the game in the bottom of the fifth by scoring twice to make the game an 8-run margin for a final of 12-4.
