CHICOPEE, Mass. - February 17, 2022 - The Dean College men's basketball team earned a pivotal Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) road win in convincing fashion at Elms, 101-71, Thursday evening.
The Bulldogs earned the season sweep of Elms after defeating them at home a week ago, 98-85.
With the win, Dean improves to 8-15 overall and jumps in front of Elms in the conference standings with a 3-13 record to move into the final postseason spot with one game to play. The Bulldogs welcome Emmanuel to Pieri Gymnasium on Saturday at 3 p.m. for a regular season finale. Elms drops to 2-20 overall and 2-14 in the GNAC.
Senior
Traijan Powell (Sierra Vista, Ariz.) led all players with a season-high 30 points for the Bulldogs. He shot 12-17 from the floor and made 6-7 from beyond the arc. Junior
Mark Blair (Rosedale, N.Y.) notched his 12th double-double of the season and finished with 23 points and 16 rebounds. Junior
Hunter Meyer (Taylor Mill, Ky.) also recorded his third double-double in the past four games with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Elms was led by Tahquell Cadle with 19 points. Justin Feliciano added 15 points, while DJ Edelen chipped in with 12.
The Bulldogs led 25-15 midway through the first half after a pair of
Nick Sampeck (Blanco, Texas) free throws. The lead ballooned to 15 points, 44-29, when Powell drilled his third trey of the half. Powell added another made three, but Elms scored the last five points of the frame to cut into the Dean lead at the break, 49-38. Powell had 16 points in the half and was 4-4 from long range.
Dean kept the offensive pressure up in the second half behind a balanced scoring attack and efficient shooting. After the Blazers opened the half with a pair of free throws to cut the deficit to nine, Dean ran away from that point holding a comfortable double digit lead throughout the remainder of the game. The Bulldogs were 56.7% from the floor and 66.7% from beyond the arc to score 52 points in the final 20 minutes.
Dean outrebounded Elms 51-31. The Bulldogs shot the 3-pt ball with extreme efficiency this evening at 57.9% (11-19) and held Elms to 24.1% (7-29).
