Football Drops Season Finale in First Overtime to Keystone 45-44

FRANKLIN, Mass. – November 12, 2022 – The Dean College football team was edged in the first overtime by Keystone, 45-44, in an Eastern Collegiate Football Conference (ECFC) season finale at Lippert Field on senior day Saturday afternoon.

Dean concludes the 2022 season at 1-9 overall and 1-5 in the conference. Keystone ends its season at 3-7 overall and 3-3 in the ECFC.

After tying the contest with a 22-yard field goal as time expired, Keystone came away with a touchdown and an extra point on the first possession of overtime. Dean answered with a touchdown and went for the two-point conversion for the win but did not convert.

Dean junior quarterback Mozes Mooney (San Diego, Calif.) went 20-of-32 for 246 yards and four touchdowns. He added 46 yards on the ground and a two-point conversion pass. Junior Holdan Wilson (Spanish Fort, Ala.) accumulated 115 rushing yards and two scores. Senior Quintus Reid (New Haven, Conn.) led all pass catchers with 12 receptions, 175 yards and two touchdowns. Senior Kam Phuong (Covington, Ga.) and junior Jordan Mason (Stockbridge, Ga.) each added a touchdown reception.

On the defensive side of the ball for the Bulldogs, senior Des Dias (Rochester, Mass.) had nine tackles. Senior Alex Huber (Sacramento, Calif.) had two interceptions, while junior Dre Kidd (Manassas, Va.) had one pick with a 37-yard return. Freshman Brandon Lane (Valdosta, Ga.) finished with five tackles and an important pass breakup on fourth down late in the fourth.

Keystone senior quarterback Tom Roach (Burlington City, N.J.) finished 13-of-27 for 133 yards with two touchdowns and three interceptions. He added a rushing touchdown. Sophomore Mujaheed Muhammad (Philadelphia, Pa.) gobbled up 234 rushing yards and two touchdowns, including a 73-yard score. Junior Da'Jaun Vales (Magnolia, N.J.) also scored on the ground. Senior Kevin Lewis (Philadelphia, Pa.) and sophomore Richie Crews (Cuddebackville, N.Y.) each caught a touchdown pass.

Seniors Carlos Perez (Reading, Pa.) and Frankie Vega (Edison, N.J.) had 10 tackles apiece to lead the Keystone defense.

A few minutes into the contest, a Kidd interception return for 37 yards set up the Bulldogs at the Keystone 1-yard line. On the next play, Wilson ran up the middle for the score. Dean missed the point after to lead 6-0 at 8:02.

On the ensuing Keystone possession, Muhammad broke through for a 73-yard run to take a 7-6 lead.

Dean took a 9-7 lead with less than four minutes to go in the first on a 29-yard field goal by freshman kicker Nikolai Luksch (Middlebury, Vt.).

The Bulldogs opened the scoring in the second quarter when Mooney found Reid for a 28-yard catch in the end zone. Dean led 16-7 at the 12:33 mark.

Keystone responded on its next drive with a jet sweep by Vales from four yards out for the score. The Giants cut the deficit to 16-14 with 10:43 to play in the half.

Mooney and Reid continued to be on the same page later in the second frame. The two connected for a 25-yard pass and catch to give Dean a 23-14 advantage.

The Giants put together a 10-play, 66-yard drive late in the quarter, which was capped by a Lewis 7-yard TD catch from Roach to make the score 23-21 in favor of Dean heading into the break.

After a forced fumble gave possession back to the Bulldogs, Dean drove 45 yards and punched in a touchdown on a 5-yard run by Wilson to take a 30-21 lead with 4:35 to play in the third.

Keystone answered with a Crews 31-yard touchdown reception from Roach on a free play after the Dean defense jumped offside. The extra point pulled the Giants within a pair at 30-28 late in the third.

Facing a third-and-1 situation on the Dean 42-yard line three minutes into the final quarter, Roach called his own number for a QB sneak and got to the second level and outran everyone for the go-ahead touchdown (35-30) and the Giants' first lead since 7-6.

The back-and-forth action continued as Dean went 75 yards in 11 plays, capped by a Phuong 7-yard TD catch. He also caught the two-point conversion to give Dean a 38-35 lead with 8:32 to play.

Keystone got the final possession of regulation with 1:03 left to play and went 73 yards to set up a game-tying 22-yard field goal by Josue Hernandez (Middlesex, N.J.) as time expired.

Muhammad rushed in from seven yards out on the first overtime possession to put Keystone in front by seven.

Dean answered with a 19-yard touchdown reception from Mason on their overtime possession, but the game-winning two-point try was thwarted by a Keystone interception.
