Men's Soccer Falls In Season Finale To Saint Joseph's

Franklin, Mass.-  The Dean College Men's Soccer team lost to Saint Joseph's College (Maine) on Wednesday, falling 5-0 to the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) foe in the regular season finale.

With the win, Saint Joseph's improved to 12-4-1 overall and 11-1 in conference play to secure the top spot in the GNAC tournament, while the Bulldogs finished the season with an overall mark of 4-8-4 and a GNAC record of 2-7-3 to just miss out on a postseason berth by two points.  

The Monks wasted no time getting on the scoreboard, converting a penalty kick off the foot of Austin Ward in the fourth minute. In the 13th minute, the visitors extended their lead to 2-0 on an own goal from Dean on a deflection after a save. The Bulldogs held off the Monks attack for the rest of the half, threatening at times on the counterattack, but unable to break through. 

Saint Joseph's scored two quick goals to extend their lead to 4-0 four minutes into the second half. Ward scored his second of the day, beating the Bulldog keeper Alberto Gonzalez Del Rio (Madrid, Spain) to the near post, before Gus Ford added insurance three minutes later.

The Monks tacked on a final goal in the 87th minute from Nate Sottack on a penalty kick. 

Melvin Alves (Brockton, Mass.) and Reinorf Kusi (Malden, Mass.) led Dean with two shots each. Jake Richard (Townsend, Mass.) also registered a shot. Jake Godwin (Norwalk, Conn.) started the game in goal and finished with two saves in 45 minutes. Gonzalez Del Rio came on in relief and registered a save before giving way to Keegan West (Somers, Conn,) who saw his first action of the year in goal.
