FRANKLIN, Mass. – October 19, 2022 – The Dean College field hockey team was edged by the University of Saint Joseph (USJ), 2-0, in a chilly Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) match at Grant Field on Wednesday.
Dean (0-14, 0-9 GNAC) travels to Saint Joseph's College of Maine on Saturday for a noon game against the Monks. Saint Joseph (2-12, 2-7 GNAC) plays at Rivier on Saturday at 1 p.m.
The visitors broke a scoreless tie, less than four minutes into the second quarter, when they were awarded a penalty stroke. First-year McKenzie Fairfax (Waterbury, Conn.) stepped to the spot and converted the try for her first collegiate goal.
USJ added an insurance goal in the latter stages of the third quarter on a nice play in front of the cage. First-year Isabella Pelletier (Weare, N.H.) found the stick of first-year Ariana Komonaj (Thomaston, Conn.) who one-timed the ball into the back of the goal for her third tally of the season.
The Bulldogs had a couple of great scoring chances, but each attempt was turned away by great saves from the USJ goalie.
Dean junior goalie
Mackenzie Fillion (New Bedford, Mass.) had five saves, while sophomore
Madison Gilbert (Sanbornton, N.H.) chipped in with a defensive save. Junior Wendy Bowden (Old Saybrook, Conn.) had two saves to earn her second shutout of the season for the Blue Jays.
USJ had an 11-2 advantage in shots and a 6-2 margin in penalty corners.
