FRANKLIN, Mass. – October 15, 2022 – The Gallaudet University football team erased a 23-6 deficit to stun Dean College, 26-23, during homecoming weekend on Saturday at Lippert Field.
Dean (0-6, 0-2 ECFC) travels to Alfred State next Saturday for a noon kick. Gallaudet (5-1, 3-0 ECFC) returns home on Saturday to host Maritime (N.Y.) at 1 p.m.
Dean junior
Mozes Mooney (San Diego, Calif.) was pressed into quarterback duties and went 14-of-22 for 231 yards and a touchdown. Mooney was named the Thomas "Butchie" Williams '75 Homecoming Game Most Valuable Player. The award is named after a former student-athlete who passed away tragically on Homecoming in 1974 and is handed out annually to the Dean football student-athlete who is selected as to have had the most impact on the contest.
Senior
Quintus Reid (New Haven, Conn.) and freshman
Will Stafford (Whitman, Mass.) each had a rushing touchdown, while Reid added a receiving score.
On the defensive side for the Bulldogs,
Des Dias (Rochester, Mass.) had a team best nine tackles. Junior
Dre Kidd (Manassas, Va.) added six, including three tackles for loss.
For Gallaudet, sophomore Brandon Washington (Citronelle, Ala.) had a passing, rushing and receiving touchdown in the game. Junior Nicholas Maccini (San Diego, Calif.) chipped in with a passing touchdown, while Jaylen Johnson (Dublin, Calif.) caught a TD pass.
Sophomore Antonio Mendoza (Waco, Texas) led the Bison with 10 tackles with 2.5 for loss. Sophomore Jacob Hartman (Petersburg, W.Va.) added nine tackles with 3.5 for loss.
The Bulldogs got on the scoreboard with a 22-yard field goal from
Nikolai Luksch (Middlebury, Vt.) with 5:06 to play in the first.
Dean sophomore
Joe Penton (Bealeton, Va.) then recovered a fumble deep in the Gallaudet zone to set up the Bulldogs with a great scoring chance.
Will Stafford rushed in from two yards out to put Dean on top, 9-0.
In the first play of the second quarter, the Bulldogs increased their lead to 16-0 with a 48-yard touchdown run by
Quintus Reid.
Gallaudet answered before the end of the half when Nicholas Maccini connected with Brandon Washington for a 38-yard catch and run. The two-point conversion failed to make the score 16-6 at the half.
Mooney found Reid in the corner of the end zone from 22 yards out for a score early in the third quarter. Luksch converted the extra point to give the Bulldogs a 23-6 lead.
Gallaudet began to turn things around towards the end of the third when Jaylen Johnson hauled in a 20-yard pass from Washington to cut the deficit to 23-12.
With 5:07 left to play in regulation, Washington had a 6-yard scamper into the end zone to pull the Bison within 23-18.
On the ensuing Dean possession, the Gallaudet defense held and forced a punt from deep in the Bulldogs' end. The Bison sent pressure, blocked the punt and recovered in the end zone for the go-ahead score.
Dean would get the ball back with 16 seconds to play but ran out of time.
