Box Score DARTMOUTH, Mass. - September 2, 2021 - After 673 days without a competition, the Dean College women's soccer team returned to action on Thursday evening to begin the 2021 season. The Bulldogs traveled to UMass Dartmouth and came away with a 2-2 draw.
Dean's (0-0-1) next scheduled game for Sunday has been canceled. The Bulldogs will host its first Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) match on Saturday, Sept. 11 against Regis. UMass Dartmouth (0-0-1) returns to the pitch at Salem State on Saturday.
The home team wasted little time opening the scoring less than two minutes into the match. Meredith Castro beat the Dean keeper into the lower left corner to give the Corsairs an early 1-0 lead.
The Bulldogs quickly found the equalizer, four minutes later. After UMass Dartmouth was whistled for a foul in the box, junior Lindsey Adams (Cranston, R.I.) calmly stepped to the penalty spot and scored into the right side of the goal.
Dean carried the momentum into the 10th minute of the half. Junior Janey Boldrighini (Fairfield, Conn.) sent a corner kick into the box where first-year Nicole Seidell (Enfield, Conn.) headed the ball into the opposite corner of the net to put the Bulldogs in front 2-1.
The visitors held the lead until the 83rd minute when Kaitlyn Nguyen scored in traffic in front of the net to pull the Corsairs even at 2-2.
The teams played two scoreless 10-minute overtime sessions to end the match at 2-2.
Dean first-year goalie Haley Gaunt (Johnston, R.I.) played all 110 minutes and made 12 stops in her collegiate debut. UMD keeper Jessica Costa worked the first half with two goals against and 1 save, while Katherine Hubbard played the final 65 minutes with one save.
UMass Dartmouth held a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks.
