FRANKLIN, Mass. – November 22, 2021 – Junior
Alexah Potter (East Hartford, Conn.) scored 29 points and grabbed 20 rebounds to lead the Dean College women's basketball team to an 80-63 victory over the University of Maine at Fort Kent.
Dean evens its record to 2-2. The Bulldogs resume action on Dec. 1 with a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) opener at Regis College with a 6 p.m. tip. UMFK falls to 0-4.
Potter shot 13-26 from the floor and added three blocks for the Bulldogs. First-year
Tori Viau (Johnston, R.I.) made four treys to finish with 15 points, while first-year
Maranda Cournoyer (Millville, Mass.) added 13 points on 5-7 shooting in 22 minutes off the bench. Senior
Shania Springer (Brooklyn, N.Y.) finished with 11 assists.
UMFK was led by Keri La's (Daly City, Calif.) 15 points. Jzane Cavalli-Money (South Sacramento, Calif.) scored 14 points, while Jayonah Chaboya (Salinas, Calif.) chipped in with 11 points. First-year Karolyn Baptiste (Nassau, Bahamas) added 10 points. First-year Arieyle Baker (Lake Wales, Fla.) registered nine points and 17 rebounds.
Dean won the rebounding battle 60-42 and outscored UMFK 50-20 in the paint.
The visitors went on top 16-11 with 3:11 left in the first quarter. Dean turned the tide and finished the frame with 10 straight points, including a couple of buckets from first-year
Tori Andrewski (North Sutton, N.H.), to take a 21-16 lead at the end of one.
The second quarter was filled with runs by both teams, six lead changes and five ties. The Bengals went 8-9 from the free throw line in the frame and edged Dean 21-20 in the quarter, but the Bulldogs held a 41-37 lead at the half.
Potter scored the first eight points for the Bulldogs in the third and pushed the lead to 49-42. UMFK responded with a 12-2 run, capped by a Sheyla Aguilar jumper with 3:27 left in the stanza. The teams traded buckets down the stretch and the Bengals were able to hold on for a 57-56 lead after 30 minutes.
The Bulldogs pushed the pace in the fourth and turned up the defense to pull away for the comfortable victory. Dean held UMFK to one bucket for the first 7:33 of the quarter, while scoring 22 points of their own. The Bulldogs scored 16 points in the paint to help outscore UMFK 24-6 in the fourth.
