THE LEAD:
Eastern Nazarene – one of the country's hottest teams – escaped with a 2-1 win over Dean College in New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) men's soccer action on Wednesday evening.
The Lions who are receiving votes in several national polls and haven't loss since a season-opening defeat to Nichols College back on August 30, found themselves locked in a battle with a very formidable Bulldog squad.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Eastern Nazarene went into intermission with a 1-0 lead courtesy of the league-leading 13th goal from Charlie Swann.
The game stayed that way until some stellar passing got the Bulldogs on the board in the 74th minute. Luke Palmer (Windsor Locks, Conn.) sent a ball up the right side to a streaking John Kauffman (East Providence, R.I.), who deposited his second career goal into the upper left corner at 73:42.
Despite being outshot, 30-8, it looked as if Dean and the Lions were headed to an extra session, but with 25 seconds remaining in regulation, ENC started to transition the ball of the field with a goal kick. It eventually made its was inside the 18-yard box and a low rolling shot across the goal mouth with less than ten seconds to play bounced off of a sliding Bulldog defender into the net for the game-winning score with six seconds left to play.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
Bryce Antoch (Cranston, R.I.) was strong in defeat for the Bulldogs, turning aside 13 shots – his fifth game this season with ten or more saves.
UP NEXT:
Dean returns to action on Saturday when they play host to New England College at noon.
