FRANKLIN, Mass. – April 22, 2023 - The Dean College softball team swept a Saturday doubleheader against Fisher on senior day at the Longley Athletic Complex. The Bulldogs walked off with a 9-8 win in game one and followed with a 13-5 triumph in five innings in game two.
Prior to the start of today's doubleheader, Dean honored seniors
Sari Albury (Nassau, Bahamas),
Gianna Bencivengo (White Plains, N.Y.),
Zoe Coleman (Warwick, R.I.),
Sarah Graeff (Petersham, Mass.),
Alex Marie (Danvers, Mass.) and
Jaylee Martinez (Pawtucket, R.I.) for their years of hard work and dedication to Dean College and the softball program. The team also recognized manager Nico Levasseur and sophomore
Shirley Chan (Kowloon, Hong Kong).
Dean (5-24-1) hosts Nichols for a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday.
GAME ONE: Dean 9, Fisher 8
Fisher scored a pair of unearned runs in the first inning to take an early lead.
Dean quickly answered with three runs in the bottom half of the first. Bencivengo singled home a pair and then scored on an RBI double by Graeff.
In the second, Dean went on top 4-2 when first-year
Sydnee Ramos (New Bedford, Mass.) scored on a wild pitch.
Fisher took a 6-5 lead in the third by scoring four times on five hits. Freshman Kalia Zellmer (Bothell, Wash.) doubled in a run and then scored on a Madison Kelley (Mossup, Conn.) double. Kelley scored on a ground out and was followed by an RBI single from Ariana Ramos Cardona (Isabela, P.R.).
Graeff tied the game for the Bulldogs in the bottom of the inning with a double to right.
The Falcons regained the lead in the fourth on a two-run blast by Zellmer.
The Bulldogs responded once again to score three runs and tie the game at 8-8 after four innings. Ramos had an RBI double then scored on a Marie triple down the line. Marie came in on a sac fly by Albury.
After two scoreless innings, in the bottom of the seventh junior
Jilian Glynn (Londonderry, N.H.) beat out an infield single to start things. She then stole second and advanced to third on a ground out. After the next batter grounded out to the pitcher, junior
Meredith Landers (Littleton, Mass.) delivered the game-winning hit that scored Glynn for the 9-8 Dean win.
Glynn earned the win with four innings of relief. She gave up one earned run on two hits with seven strikeouts.
Ramos finished 3 for 4 with three runs and a couple of stolen bases. Graeff also went 3 for 4 and knocked in a pair.
Zellmer went 2 for 3 with three RBIs and three runs to lead Fisher.
GAME TWO: Dean 13, Fisher 5 (5 inn.)
In game two, the Dean bats belted 13 hits and scored 13 runs.
Sari Albury was 3 for 4 with two home runs, including a grand slam, and seven RBIs. Graeff added another three hits to give her six on the day. Marie went 3 for 3 and scored four runs.
Dean scored three times in the first with two runs coming on Albury's eighth home run of the season.
Emma Romano (Carlstadt, N.J.) brought in a run by drawing a bases loaded walk.
Marie scored on an error in the second to put Dean on top 4-0.
In the third, the Bulldogs erupted for eight runs. Albury was responsible for four of them as she belted her second home run of the game, this time in grand fashion as she cleared the bases.
The Falcons got on the board in the fourth with two runs on a pair of RBI hits.
Albury knocked in her seventh run of the game with a single to center in the bottom of the fourth to put Dean in front 13-2.
Fisher rallied a bit in the top of the fifth. Kelley hit a three-run homer over the left field fence, but Glynn then got a strikeout and a ground out to end the game.
Glynn picked up her second win of the day with a complete game and four more strikeouts.
