Softball Drops Season Finale Doubleheader to Saint Joseph

FRANKLIN, Mass. – April 30, 2022 – The Dean College softball team fell to the University of Saint Joseph in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) regular season doubleheader finale for both teams. The Blue Jays won game one 8-2 and game two 6-0.  

Dean ends its season at 6-24 overall and 3-15 in the GNAC. USJ improves to 20-18 overall and 10-8 in the conference standings to earn a berth in the GNAC Tournament.  

GAME ONE – Saint Joseph 8, Dean 2

The visitors broke a scoreless tie with a run in the top of the third with an RBI single from Frankie Ferrante (Southington, Conn.).

USJ added two to the lead in the fourth on an Amanda Savinelli (New Haven, Conn.) squeeze bunt and a misplayed infield fly.

Dean got a run back in the fifth when first-year Shirley Chan (Kowloon, Hong Kong) crossed home plate on a wild pitch.

The Bulldogs came one run closer in the sixth with an RBI double by senior Miranda Seacord (Cambridge, N.Y.).

The Blue Jays responded with five runs on five hits and an error in the seventh to secure the 8-2 win. Brianna Catalani (Watertown, Conn.) had a two-run double in the inning.

Seacord and senior Shelby Smith (Southwick, Mass.) each finished 2-for-4 for Dean. Seacord swiped two bases, while Smith stole one.  

First-year Jenna Zup (Berlin, Conn.) led USJ with three hits.

Savinelli earned the complete game victory with two runs on six hits and six strikeouts.

Dean junior Zoe Coleman (Warwick, R.I.) threw a clean inning of relief.

GAME TWO – Saint Joseph 6, Dean 0

The Blue Jays plated a run in the second on an Abigail Dillon (Portland, Conn.) single to left.

USJ scored a pair in the fourth on a bases loaded walk and an RBI fielder's choice by Zup.

The visitors tacked on three runs in the seventh on a pair of RBI singles from Catalani and Jenna Masiello (Cromwell, Conn.) and an error to take game two by a 6-0 score.

Senior Natalie Amato (Cheshire, Conn.) allowed three hits and struck out 16 in the shutout victory.

Seacord and Smith continued their nice day at the plate with a hit apiece for the Bulldogs. Seacord added two more stolen bases to give her a GNAC-leading 34 for the season. Smith also swiped her second bag of the day.

Dillon had three hits to lead the Blue Jays.

Coleman took the loss for Dean but allowed only three earned runs in the complete game.
