Dean College opened up its second season of existence with an emphatic 3-0 win over Pine Manor behind a strong inaugural performance from freshman Joel Carmona (Lawrence, Mass.) in non-league men' volleyball action on Tuesday evening.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
In the opening set, Pine Manor took a 6-2 lead as both teams tried to find their footing early on. The Bulldogs eventually settled down as back-to-back kills from Carmona evened the score at 14-14.
Carmona continued his hot hitting with two more kills and when that was accompanied by some attack errors from the Gators and a Gabe McClain (Los Angeles, Calif.) service ace, the Bulldogs were in front, 21-17.
Pine Manor got as close as three at 23-21 after a Dion Johnson kill and a Carmona error, but Dean finished off the first set with kills from Gabe Villalobos-Campos (Chevy Chase, Md.) and Carmona.
The Bulldogs led wire-to-wire in the second set with their advantage peaking out at 23-15 following four straight unforced Gator errors.
Diondre Charros (Fairhaven, Mass.) recorded two kills in the final three points, including the set-sealing hammer that gave Dean a 2-0 lead.
Pine Manor came out on fire in the third set, running off four straight points to take a 14-10 lead. Dean did even the score at 16-16 after a Carmona kill but the Gators scored five of the next seven points to take a 21-18 advantage and force a Bulldog timeout.
Dean closed the gap with consecutive points out of the timeout and even after an attack error, they knotted the score following another Carmona kill and a Gator error.
The Bulldogs took their first lead of the set when Villalobos-Campos and Dean Bennett (Bloomfield, N.J.) delivered back-to-back kills.
After the Gators tied the game at 24-24, Dean sealed the victory with a kill from Bennett and a service ace from Bobby Tetreault (Mattapoisett, Mass.).
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
Carmona paced the Bulldogs with 13 kills and 11 digs, while Tetreault doled out a match-best 15 assists to go along with nine digs.
Johnson was the star for Pine Manor, totaling eight kills, seven service aces and five digs.
Dean jumps right back into action on Thursday when they travel to Emerson for a 7:00 PM showdown with the Lions. Pine Manor, meanwhile, returns to the hardwood tomorrow night when they head to Eastern Nazarene.
