In a game of inches, it was third-seeded Eastern Nazarene who saw the ball bounce in their favor as they advanced to the semifinals of the New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) men's soccer tournament with a 2-0 victory over sixth-seeded Dean College on Sunday evening.
The Lions will face the tournament's second seed, New England College, on Thursday afternoon in Henniker, N.H.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Eastern Nazarene jumped on the attack early on and broke through when Bryan Vargas ripped his fourth goal of the season into the back of the net at the 10:47 mark.
Dean had an excellent chance to even the score less than a minute later when Kyle Lameiras (North Attleboro, Mass.) forced a Lions' turnover but his subsequent shot banged off the crossbar.
Midway through the second half Eastern Nazarene pushed their lead to two goals when Charlie Swann recorded his league-leading 16th goal of the season at the 68:27.
The Bulldogs had another excellent chance to get on the board in the 72nd minute when a free kick went into the box but Zeki Zai (Cleveland, Ohio) saw his header stopped by the fingertips of Lions netminder Tim Eddings.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
Eastern Nazarene held a 22-11 edge in shots taken and a 10-1 advantage in corner kicks. Bryce Antoch (Cranston, R.I.), meanwhile, made six saves in goal for Dean.
