Freshman Liam Crowley (Taunton, Mass.) scored a pair of goals – one in each half – and host Dean College ended its regular season with a hard-fought 2-0 win over Mitchell College in New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) men's soccer action on Wednesday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Crowley's first goal came courtesy of some excellent passing from Davonn Smith (Lowell, Mass.) and Reinorf Kusi (Mattapan, Mass.) as Kusi's pass across the goal mouth from left to right found the foot of Crowley who tapped in his second goal of the season at 10:52.
The Mariners had several chances to get on the board but Dean netminder Bryce Antoch (Cranston, R.I.) and some luck kept them off the board. Antoch, who turned aside nine shots to record his third shutout of the season, made a handful of spectacular stops. Mitchell looked as if they might even things up in the first half when Nolan Clack fired a shot but in banged off the lower corner of the right post in the 23rd minute.
It was still 1-0 in favor of the Cardinal and White when Crowley converted a penalty kick in the 55th minute, pushing the Dean advantage to two goals.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
The Mariners held a commanding 24-5 edge in shots – but only nine were on goal. Overall, the contest proved to be extremely physical with nine cautions being handed out – two of which were red cards.
Both teams have secured spots in the upcoming NECC Tournament, which begins on Sunday. The pairings for the tournament will be announced on Wednesday evening.
