The Dean College Bulldogs continued their strong play, knocking off Bay Path 3-1 on Thursday night in East Longmeadow, Mass. for their second straight win.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Dean raced out to a 10-1 lead in the opening set and appeared to be on their way to an easy opening victory leading 22-12, but the Wildcats responded with nine of the next ten points to cut the lead to 23-21. Dean fended off the late challenge with the final two points on a kill from Kait Anderson (Clinton, Conn.) and a Bay Path error to secure the opening set win.
Set two was close throughout, needing additional points to decide a winner. Bay Path scored the final two points after a 26-all tie to take the set 28-26.
The Bulldogs took a 16-9 lead in set three and maintained a comfortable lead throughout, cruising to a 25-16 decision.
Dean jumped on the hosts early in the fourth set, taking a 7-2 lead out of the gate. Bay Path rallied, tying the score at 8. Back and forth action ensued down the stretch, before Dean scored the final two points on kills from Anderson and Melanie Rios-Nevarez (Vega Alta, Puerto Rico) to seal the match.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
The Bulldogs star seniors Rios-Nevarez and Anderson were dominant, registering 19 and 18 kills respectively. Sadie Homer (North Easton, Mass.) posted a monster double-double with 30 assists and 12 digs. Amanda Payne (Millis, Mass.) anchored the backline with 19 digs.
The win for the Bulldogs was their second straight and third in the last five. After an 0-6 start, Dean is 4-3 in their last seven games.
The Bulldogs host Pine Manor on Saturday in a doubleheader. The first game starts at 10:30 a.m.
